NBA Star Schröder Leads Germany to EuroBasket Glory

Germany were crowned European basketball champions for just the second time in their history — and for the first time since 1993 — after a thrilling 88-83 win over Turkey in the final held in Riga, Latvia.

The “Mannschaft” added this continental title to their historic first-ever FIBA World Cup triumph in 2023 over Serbia.

Germany fully deserved the crown, winning all nine of their games, including a quarterfinal victory over Slovenia and their star Luka Dončić, a semifinal triumph over Finland and Lauri Markkanen, and finally overcoming Turkey and their standout player Alperen Şengün in the final, denying them a maiden European title.

After trailing 40-46 at halftime and falling behind by as many as 11 points, Germany stormed back in the third quarter, winning it 26-21, before dominating the fourth quarter 22-16 to seal the game. The lead changed hands 15 times, and the teams were tied on 11 occasions before Germany finally pulled ahead for good with a 5-point margin.

Turkey were up 83-82 with 1:34 left following a basket by American-born Shane Larkin, but the brilliant Dennis Schröder took over in crunch time, reclaiming the lead for Germany at 84-83, adding another basket with 19 seconds remaining to make it 86-83, and calmly sinking two free throws with eight seconds left to secure the 88-83 victory.

Isaac Bonga led the way for the champions with 20 points and 5 rebounds, Franz Wagner added 18 points and 8 boards, while Schröder contributed 16 points and 12 assists, earning him the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award during the trophy ceremony amid wild celebrations from his teammates — including Wagner, who played a crucial role in the win.

For Turkey — who suffered their second-ever EuroBasket final defeat after their 2001 loss at home to Yugoslavia — Şengün was outstanding with 28 points, while Cedi Osman added 23 points and 5 rebounds, and Larkin chipped in with 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 9 assists.
