Sevilla Humble Barcelona in 4–1 Rout as Flick’s Men Miss Chance to Reclaim La Liga Summit

Barcelona’s bid to return to the top of La Liga ended in humiliation as they were dismantled 4–1 by Sevilla — their heaviest defeat against the Andalusian club since 1951.

The defending champions entered the match knowing victory would restore them to first place ahead of Real Madrid, but instead endured a sobering afternoon at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán. Hansi Flick’s side, already bruised from their midweek Champions League loss to Paris Saint-Germain, looked short of ideas and conviction.

Former Barça winger Alexis Sánchez struck first from the penalty spot after captain Ronald Araújo clumsily brought down Isaac Romero near the byline. Romero doubled Sevilla’s lead midway through the half, finishing off a swift counterattack that exposed the visitors’ defensive frailties.

Just before the break, Marcus Rashford offered brief hope, volleying home Pedri’s inviting cross at the back post to make it 2–1. But any chance of a comeback vanished when Robert Lewandowski dragged his second-half penalty wide following a foul by Adnan Januzaj on Alejandro Balde.

As Barça pushed forward, they were punished again. José Ángel Carmona and Akor Adams each struck in the dying minutes to seal a famous Sevilla victory — their first over Barcelona in La Liga since 2011.

The result leaves Flick’s men two points behind Real Madrid, who lead with 21, while Sevilla climb to fifth and continue their resurgence under manager Quique Sánchez Flores.
