A Thousand Points Lift Rybakina to World No. 2
Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, after losing to her on Sunday in the final of the WTA 1000 Indian Wells tournament.
This marks the highest ranking of Rybakina’s career (26), as she moved up to second place at the expense of Poland’s Iga Świątek, who exited the Indian Wells quarter-finals after losing to Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina, who also rose in the rankings to eighth place.
Young Canadian Victoria Mboko (19) moved up one place to ninth, which is also a career-high ranking, surpassing another rising star, Russia’s Mirra Andreeva (18), who dropped two places to tenth after exiting in the third round at Indian Wells.
In the men’s rankings, Russia’s Daniil Medvedev returned to the top 10 despite losing the Indian Wells final to Italy’s Jannik Sinner, who remains second behind Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, ahead of the Miami Masters, which begins tomorrow (Wednesday).
Medvedev, a former world No. 1, returns to the top 10 after dropping out following his first-round exit at Wimbledon — the third Grand Slam of the year — on July 14 last year.
Meanwhile, despite losing to the Russian in the Indian Wells semi-finals, Alcaraz remains ahead of Sinner by 1,150 points. The biggest drop came from Britain’s Jack Draper, who fell from 12th to 16th after losing in the Indian Wells quarter-finals, having won the title last year.
