Arsenal pull clear at the top as Liverpool continue to fall

Arsenal moved into sole possession of first place after handing Bayern Munich their first defeat of the season across all competitions, winning 3–1 in the fifth round of the unified-group stage of the UEFA Champions League — a matchday that also saw another heavy defeat for Liverpool, this time at home, falling 1–4 to PSV Eindhoven.

At the Emirates Stadium in London, Arsenal ended their tie with Bayern thanks to goals from Dutch defender Jurriën Timber (22') and substitutes Noni Madueke (69') and Brazilian Gabriel Martinelli (76'), while Bayern’s lone strike came from talented youngster Lennart Karl (32').

Arsenal earned their fifth straight win to sit top of the table with 15 points, three ahead of Bayern and last season’s runners-up Inter Milan, who also suffered their first loss with a 1–2 defeat away to Atlético Madrid.

Liverpool, meanwhile, saw their situation worsen after a painful home loss to PSV under the inspiration of Moroccan substitute Souhaib Driouch, who scored twice in the 73rd minute and 90+1 after coming on in the 69th minute for the injured Croatian Ivan Perišić — who had opened the scoring with a penalty in the 6th minute. Guus Til added PSV’s second goal (56'), while Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai (16') scored Liverpool’s only goal.

This was PSV’s second win of the campaign, alongside one loss and two draws, taking them to 8 points in 14th place. Liverpool, on the other hand, suffered their second defeat after the earlier loss away to Galatasaray (0–1), freezing their tally at 9 points and pushing them down to 12th.

Vitinha hits three, Mbappé scores four

Portuguese midfielder Vitinha led Paris Saint-Germain back to winning ways at the expense of visiting Tottenham Hotspur, scoring a hat-trick in a 5–3 victory.

Tottenham took the lead twice through Brazilian striker Richarlison (35') and French forward Randal Kolo Muani — on loan from PSG (50') — but the defending champions hit back with two goals from Vitinha (45' and 53'). Spaniard Fabián Ruiz added PSG’s third (59'), followed by Ecuadorian defender William Pacho (65').

Kolo Muani reduced the deficit with his second of the night and Tottenham’s third (72'), before Vitinha restored PSG’s cushion with a penalty (76') to complete his hat-trick.

The Parisians therefore made up for their first defeat of the competition — a 1–2 home loss to Bayern Munich — earning their fourth win to climb to third place with 12 points, while also taking revenge for their earlier defeat to Tottenham on penalties in the UEFA Super Cup at the start of the season.

PSG rose to second place with 12 points, ahead of Bayern Munich and Inter Milan on goal difference. Inter lost in stoppage time to Atlético Madrid, after scoring a sole goal through Piotr Zieliński (54') and conceding two goals from Julián Álvarez (9') and Antoine Griezmann (90+3').

In Athens, French superstar Kylian Mbappé stole the show, leading Real Madrid back to victory and earning their first win in four matches by scoring a “super hat-trick” in a 4–3 thriller against Olympiacos.

Mbappé netted three goals in just seven first-half minutes (22', 24', 29') before adding a fourth in the second half (60'). Real Madrid, however, conceded three goals — through Portugal’s Chiquinho (8'), Iran’s Mehdi Taremi (52') and Morocco’s Ayoub El Kaabi (81').

Mbappé raised his tally to nine goals in five Champions League matches this season, strengthening his lead atop the scoring charts.

Real Madrid earned their first win after three matches, following two draws in La Liga and a 0–1 loss to Liverpool in the Champions League.
