Djokovic leaves Murray disappointed
Scottish star Andy Murray revealed his disappointment with the results achieved by Serbian champion Novak Djokovic during Murray’s stint as part of his coaching team.
Murray had joined Djokovic’s coaching staff in November 2024, just three months after announcing his retirement at age 38 following his participation in the Olympic Games held in Paris.
However, the partnership between the two icons lasted no more than six months, during which they worked together at the 2025 Australian Open and three additional tournaments.
Speaking to the media, Murray said: “I remember it well. It was an incredible experience. It didn’t last long, but I gave it absolutely everything.”
He added: “I felt disappointed. Maybe I didn’t get the results I wanted to achieve for him, but it was still a great opportunity. I wanted to try coaching at some point, and if I hadn’t taken it, I might have looked back thinking: it was fascinating, I could have learned so much — or maybe I would have regretted not doing it.”
Murray is considered one of tennis’ most decorated players, having won three Grand Slam titles during an era dominated by Djokovic, Switzerland’s Roger Federer, and Spain’s Rafael Nadal.
Under Murray’s guidance, Djokovic defeated Carlos Alcaraz to reach the semifinals of the Australian Open, but the 24-time Grand Slam champion was forced to withdraw due to injury against Germany’s Alexander Zverev.
After that, the 38-year-old Serb struggled upon returning to the tour, suffering first-round exits in both Qatar and Indian Wells, before losing the Miami Open final to rising Czech talent Jakub Mensik.
Reflecting on that stretch, Murray said: “Things were going really well at first. What happened in Australia was unfortunate, but he played unbelievable tennis there.”
He continued: “After the injury, the past few months were definitely tough for him — and I think for the entire team. I learned a lot about coaching. I was fully invested, did everything I could to help, and built strong relationships with his team.”
Murray, a father of four, said he is enjoying retirement: “I didn’t know whether I’d enjoy it or miss tennis. But I know stepping away was the right decision, and I don’t regret it.”
He concluded: “I love being a dad, and being home with the kids is wonderful.”
