Emma Raducanu Turns to Rafael Nadal’s Former Right-Hand Man in Bid for Long-Term Success

Emma Raducanu has embarked on yet another coaching chapter, but this one feels different. The 22-year-old Briton, who stunned the tennis world with her historic US Open triumph in 2021 as a qualifier, has brought in seasoned Spanish coach Francisco Roig to guide her next steps.

Roig, 57, is no ordinary appointment. For nearly two decades, he was part of Rafael Nadal’s inner circle, helping the Mallorcan legend secure all 22 of his Grand Slam titles. Known for his sharp technical eye and patient but demanding style, Roig has been described by former world number two Feliciano López as “the best coach I ever worked with.”

Raducanu arrives at the US Open this year ranked 35th, her highest position since injury troubles in 2023 saw her undergo wrist and ankle surgeries. Since returning to full fitness, she has reached a WTA semi-final in Washington and posted quarter-final runs in Miami and at Queen’s. Her resurgence has seen her edge back towards the top 30, playing with a confidence reminiscent of her breakthrough run in New York four years ago.

What Roig offers is not simply tactical tweaks but an ability to refine technique with almost microscopic precision. Toni Nadal, who worked alongside Roig for years, insists his compatriot’s gift lies in teaching players how to marry power with control. “Today’s tennis is about speed, but if you cannot put six balls in a row inside the court, you will never win. Francis can make her technically better,” he told BBC Sport.

Early signs are promising. In their first event together in Cincinnati, Raducanu not only dismissed Olga Danilovic with ease but also stretched world number one Aryna Sabalenka in a spirited performance. Roig was impressed by her appetite for work, noting that she relished long practice sessions dedicated to specific aspects such as returning and second-shot positioning.

Historically, Raducanu has gained a reputation for frequently changing coaches. Since her US Open victory, she has worked with at least six full-time or interim figures, from Torben Beltz to Sebastian Sachs. Yet, with Roig, there is a sense she may have found stability. His ability to balance technical rigor with an engaging personality could prove decisive in establishing a long-term bond.

As the US Open approaches, Raducanu looks both relaxed and driven, qualities that Roig will aim to harness into consistent results. If this partnership holds, it may mark the end of her coaching carousel and the beginning of a new era built on patience, resilience, and refined execution.
