Frimpong’s £35 m Arrival Signals a New Era on Liverpool’s Right Flank

Jeremie Frimpong touched down on Merseyside on Sunday evening and will complete the final phase of his medical on Monday, paving the way for a €35 million (£29.5 m) transfer from Bayer Leverkusen. The deal hands former club Celtic an estimated £5 m windfall thanks to a negotiated 13 % sell-on clause.

At 24, the Dutch international arrives after a stellar 2024/25 campaign in which he packed 48 appearances into Leverkusen’s schedule, producing five goals, 12 assists and more than 3,400 minutes of action. His per-90 figures underline his dynamism: 8.5 progressive carries, 2.4 chances created and a top speed recorded at 36.2 km/h. Those traits helped Xabi Alonso’s side complete last season’s historic domestic double without defeat.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot, whose side secured a record-equalling 20th league title with a 15-point cushion, admits it is “hard to improve a champion squad” but views Frimpong as the ideal complement to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s passing range. While Alexander-Arnold averaged 16 through-balls over the past two seasons, Frimpong surged past defenders 168 times, offering vertical thrust and one-versus-one flair that could unlock deep-lying opponents.

Tactically, Slot can now overload the right flank: Frimpong’s overlapping runs should free Mohamed Salah to drift centrally, or allow Liverpool to mirror the left-side triangles that proved decisive last spring. With fresh legs and a Champions League tilt ahead, the signing does more than fill a positional need—it diversifies Liverpool’s attacking grammar and offers rotation for a squad eager to defend multiple trophies.
