LeBron James Makes History with Surprise All-Star Selection
LeBron James has once again rewritten the NBA record books after being named to his 22nd consecutive NBA All-Star Game, earning a place among the Western Conference reserves in a decision that caught many observers by surprise.
At 41, the Los Angeles Lakers forward was overlooked when starters were announced in January, yet NBA coaches still deemed his influence and performance worthy of All-Star recognition. James becomes the oldest player in league history to be selected in 22 straight All-Star Games, further extending a record that already seemed untouchable.
The selection is particularly remarkable given the circumstances of his season. A bout of sciatica sidelined James for the opening 14 games of the 2025–26 campaign, forcing him to miss pre-season preparation and training camp for the first time in his career. Despite that slow start, he has appeared in 31 games, averaging 21.9 points per contest while continuing to orchestrate the Lakers’ offense with his trademark composure and court vision.
Speaking after a 112–100 defeat to the New York Knicks, James downplayed the individual honor. He admitted that All-Star selection was never a personal objective this season, explaining that his sole focus was rediscovering his rhythm and competing at the elite level he expects of himself.
James was previously selected for the 2025 All-Star Game but was forced to withdraw due to injury, making this return even more symbolic. He will be joined among Western Conference reserves by Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Anthony Edwards, underlining the depth of talent in the conference.
This year’s All-Star Game introduces a new format, featuring two United States-based teams and one international team competing in a round-robin series of four 12-minute games. The top two teams will advance to a final championship matchup, adding a competitive edge to the league’s marquee showcase.
