Liverpool Concerned as Isak Faces Potentially Serious Lower-Leg Injury

Liverpool are bracing themselves for an anxious wait after Alexander Isak was forced off with what is feared to be a significant lower-leg injury during Saturday’s 2–1 Premier League victory over Tottenham.

The Sweden international had made an immediate impact after coming off the bench, breaking the deadlock with a composed finish. However, moments after striking the ball, he was caught by Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven, leaving the striker in visible discomfort. Despite initial treatment, Isak was unable to continue, casting a shadow over an otherwise important win for Liverpool.

The 26-year-old underwent MRI scans on Sunday, with the club now awaiting detailed results to determine the severity of the injury and the length of his potential absence. Liverpool head coach Arne Slot is expected to provide an update when he addresses the media on Tuesday, though his initial reaction suggested concern.

“If a player scores and then cannot attempt to come back on, that is usually not a good sign,” Slot admitted after the match.

Isak’s season has yet to gain real momentum since his high-profile £125 million move from Newcastle United in September, a transfer that shattered Liverpool’s previous Premier League record. Limited by fitness issues and disrupted preparation, the striker has scored just twice in the league from 10 appearances, starting only sporadically across all competitions.

His struggles can be traced back to a complicated summer. Isak missed Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia due to what was described as a minor thigh issue, amid growing speculation over his future. He later trained alone at Real Sociedad, his former club, before completing his deadline-day switch to Anfield. Without a full pre-season, match sharpness has been difficult to recover at the highest level.

Liverpool’s attacking options are already stretched. Mohamed Salah remains away on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations, while Cody Gakpo is sidelined through injury. As a result, responsibility is likely to fall on Hugo Ekitike, who continued his impressive form by scoring against Spurs.

The 23-year-old Frenchman has now registered 11 goals in all competitions this season, five of them coming in his last three league outings, a run that had already pushed Isak to the bench. Should the Swede face an extended spell on the sidelines, Ekitike is expected to lead the line in a pivotal period of the campaign.

As Liverpool push to maintain momentum in a congested fixture schedule, the outcome of Isak’s scans could prove crucial to their short-term ambitions.
