Manchester United Turn to Michael Carrick as Caretaker, Ruling Out Solskjaer Return

Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of Michael Carrick as caretaker head coach until the end of the 2025/26 season, opting against a reunion with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim.

The decision marks a return to familiar territory for Carrick, who previously stepped into an interim role in late 2021 after Solskjaer’s departure, overseeing a brief but effective spell that included wins against Arsenal and Villarreal, as well as a draw at Chelsea. This time, the former midfielder is tasked with steadying the club through the remainder of the campaign as United chase their primary objective of Champions League qualification.

In an official statement, Manchester United highlighted Carrick’s deep-rooted connection to the club. Across a distinguished playing career, he made 464 appearances and lifted 17 major trophies, including five Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League. Since retiring in 2018, he has built a growing coaching résumé, serving under José Mourinho and Solskjaer before gaining further experience as head coach of Middlesbrough between 2022 and 2024.

Sources close to the club insist the board were reluctant to make another mid-season change, but felt compelled to act swiftly after concerns over results and conduct under Amorim. Director of football Jason Wilcox initiated a short-term appointment process designed to buy time for a thorough search for a permanent manager. While discussions were held with Solskjaer and Ruud van Nistelrooy, Carrick emerged as the unanimous choice, praised internally for his leadership style, collaborative approach, and intimate knowledge of the squad.

Speaking to the club’s official channels, Carrick described the role as “an honour,” underlining his belief that the current group is capable of meeting United’s demanding standards. Wilcox echoed that confidence, stating that Carrick “knows exactly what it takes to win at Manchester United.”

Carrick will be supported by an experienced backroom team including Steve Holland and Jonathan Woodgate, with Jonny Evans also returning to assist. Darren Fletcher, who briefly led the side following Amorim’s exit, has resumed his role with the under-18s.

The challenge begins immediately. Carrick’s first match sees United host Manchester City before a trip to Arsenal, with optimism boosted by the return of Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo from international duty.
