Phoenix Suns Secure Star with Record-Breaking Deal

Following the departure of one of their marquee players, Kevin Durant, to the Houston Rockets in a historic seven-team trade, the Phoenix Suns have successfully convinced their franchise cornerstone Devin Booker to sign a two-year contract extension. According to U.S. media outlets, the deal is worth $145 million, setting a new NBA record for annual salary—an astounding $72.5 million per season.

Undoubtedly, Booker has earned such a figure, as he remains the Suns’ undisputed leader and the primary force behind their success. During the 2024–2025 season, he averaged 25.6 points, 7.1 assists, and 4.1 rebounds per game.

Booker is a four-time NBA All-Star and a two-time Olympic gold medalist with Team USA. He has averaged over 25 points per game for seven consecutive seasons and, last season, became Phoenix’s all-time leading scorer in total points.

Under this new agreement, Booker will remain with the Suns through the 2029–2030 season and will become the highest-paid player on a per-season basis in NBA history—surpassing the deal signed earlier this week by reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The Canadian star agreed to a four-year, $285 million extension with the Oklahoma City Thunder, the team he led to an NBA title.

Suns owner Mat Ishbia said in an official statement: “Devin Booker embodies the Phoenix Suns. He represents the best of our organization, our community, and our future.” While Ishbia did not disclose financial figures, the statement essentially confirmed widespread media reports that the 28-year-old, originally selected 13th overall by Phoenix in the 2015 NBA Draft, finalized the deal with Ishbia in Las Vegas earlier this week.

Booker’s most notable achievement with the Suns was leading them to the 2021 NBA Finals, where they ultimately lost to the Milwaukee Bucks. His continued presence will bring much-needed stability to a franchise currently undergoing a transitional phase following a disappointing season.

It’s no surprise that the Suns committed such a large sum to retain their franchise player. Despite having one of the highest payrolls in league history—bolstered by investments in Durant and Bradley Beal—the team failed to make the playoffs, resulting in the April dismissal of head coach Mike Budenholzer. He will be replaced by 40-year-old Jordan Ott, who is stepping into his first NBA head coaching role. Ott now faces the challenge of implementing a new system with a revamped roster, following Durant’s departure in a blockbuster trade that brought in young talents like 18-year-old South Sudanese rookie Khaman Maluach, along with Dillon Brooks and Jalen Green.
