Real Madrid edge a hard-fought win but lose a star for an extended spell

Real Madrid snatched a difficult 2–1 victory over Rayo Vallecano thanks to a dramatic stoppage-time penalty converted by French star Kylian Mbappé in the tenth minute of added time, keeping the Spanish giants’ hopes alive in the La Liga title race and leaving them just one point behind leaders Barcelona.

The match was anything but straightforward for Real Madrid, who entered under heavy pressure following their recent UEFA Champions League defeat to Benfica, compounded by several key absences. Despite a strong start and early attempts to impose control, Los Blancos ran into a well-organized Rayo Vallecano defense that showed great intensity in the challenges.

The turning point came deep into stoppage time when Moroccan forward Brahim Díaz was brought down inside the box by Nabil Mendy, prompting the referee to award a penalty amid protests from Rayo players. Mbappé stepped up with confidence and fired a powerful, low shot into the left corner to seal the win.

Bellingham injury and Vinícius brilliance

Despite the joy of securing all three points, the night brought worrying news for Real Madrid, as the club confirmed that English midfielder Jude Bellingham will be sidelined for a month after suffering a hamstring injury that forced him off just nine minutes into the match. Bellingham felt sharp pain while chasing a long ball and left the pitch in tears, raising concerns among fans and the coaching staff.

The injury comes at a particularly sensitive stage of the season for Real Madrid, who are entering a decisive period both domestically and in Europe.

Bellingham is expected to miss the upcoming La Liga clash against Valencia, as well as both legs of the Champions League playoff tie against Benfica — matches that could prove crucial in shaping the team’s season.

The match did, however, feature moments of outstanding quality from Brazilian winger Vinícius Júnior, who opened the scoring in the 16th minute after a superb solo run, finishing with a powerful, curling strike into the far corner beyond the goalkeeper’s reach.

Rayo Vallecano refused to surrender and found an equalizer early in the second half through Álvaro García, a goal that sparked frustration among the Real Madrid supporters, who voiced their displeasure as the team’s performance dipped and clear chances became harder to come by.

Rayo’s task grew tougher when they finished the match with nine men after Pathé Ciss was shown a straight red card for a heavy challenge on Dani Ceballos, followed by Pep Chavarría receiving a second yellow card in the closing minutes. Despite the numerical disadvantage, the visitors defended valiantly, closing down spaces and making it difficult for Real Madrid to break through.

Real Madrid missed several opportunities, most notably a close-range header from Vinícius, an Mbappé effort that struck the crossbar, and a shot from compatriot Eduardo Camavinga that rebounded off the post. As pressure mounted, the game appeared to be heading for a draw before Mbappé delivered at the decisive moment to earn a precious victory.

After the match, Uruguayan captain Federico Valverde highlighted the importance of returning to winning ways, stressing that the result provided a significant morale boost following the European setback. He added that the players must work harder to improve their attacking efficiency and avoid relying on opponents’ mistakes in what looks set to be a long, intense title race that could go down to the final round against rivals Barcelona.
