San Antonio Gets Their Star Back, While Philadelphia Loses Theirs

After missing NBA action since mid-February due to a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in his right shoulder, French center Victor Wembanyama has been medically cleared to rejoin the San Antonio Spurs.

Wembanyama was originally expected to return in time for the team’s training camp in late September, but his recovery progressed much faster than anticipated. “I’ve officially been cleared to resume team training,” he confirmed in a media interview. “The club’s medical staff gave me the green light. It was definitely a scary injury, but the worst is behind me. Physically and mentally, I feel much better.” He added, “We can now officially say the clot is gone. Typically, it doesn’t come back.”

However, despite his recovery, the 21-year-old phenom will miss the upcoming EuroBasket tournament (August 27–September 14). “I really hoped my rehab would move faster,” Wembanyama admitted. “But without certainty, I couldn’t take the risk of playing in the EuroBasket.”

Wembanyama previously helped France win silver in basketball at the most recent Olympic Games in Paris, where they fell in the final to Team USA.

Paul George Undergoes Surgery

On the injury front for Philadelphia, the 76ers announced that star forward Paul George underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee following a training injury.

The team confirmed the 35-year-old had a successful procedure in New York and will begin a monitored rehab program. His status will be reevaluated before training camp opens in late September.

A nine-time NBA All-Star, George signed with the Sixers this past July after previous stints with the Indiana Pacers, Oklahoma City Thunder, and LA Clippers. Over 15 seasons, he’s averaged 20.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1.7 steals per game.

George was expected to form a formidable trio in Philly alongside Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, signing a four-year, $212 million deal. But plagued by several injuries—including a bone bruise in the knee and groin issues—he was limited to 41 games in which he averaged 16.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists. The trio of George, Maxey, and Embiid only played 15 games together.

The Sixers ended the season with a 24–58 record—their worst since 2015–16—and missed the playoffs entirely.
