Inter found an equalizer before halftime when Lautaro Martínez capped a well-orchestrated move in the 42nd minute, showcasing the Italian side’s technical prowess. However, despite controlling most of the possession and tempo, Inter couldn’t break through again. Martínez had another goal ruled out for offside in the second half, while Sergio Canales came closest for Monterrey, smashing the post with a ferocious effort.

Christian Chivu, debuting as Inter’s manager, admitted his team struggled to convert dominance into goals, particularly in the sweltering California heat. “We lacked bite in the final third,” he said. “It’s the beginning, and we’re adapting to new systems like zonal marking on set pieces.”

For Monterrey and their new boss Domènec Torrent, this result was a statement. The Mexican side has now scored in 12 of their last 13 Club World Cup matches, a testament to their consistent attacking approach on the global stage. Ramos’ leadership brought calmness under pressure, as Inter pushed relentlessly for a winner in the closing stages.
