Spain Caught Off Guard as Lamine Yamal Undergoes Groin Procedure Without Federation’s Knowledge

Spain’s football federation has voiced “surprise and concern” after learning that Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal underwent a groin procedure without their prior knowledge, leading to his withdrawal from the national squad ahead of this month’s World Cup qualifiers.

The 18-year-old, who featured and scored in Barcelona’s 4-2 win over Celta Vigo on Sunday, was expected to join Spain for matches against Georgia and Turkey on 15 and 18 November. However, medical reports revealed that the teenager underwent a radiofrequency treatment on Monday morning to address discomfort in his pubic area—news that the federation claims was not communicated in advance.

“I’ve never experienced a situation like this,” admitted Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente. “You don’t know anything, then suddenly you’re told about a medical procedure. Naturally, you’re left surprised.”

According to an RFEF statement, the federation only became aware of the operation after receiving a medical report late on Monday night recommending a 7–10 day rest period. Consequently, the federation decided to release the player from the squad, prioritizing his health and safety. Rayo Vallecano’s Jorge de Frutos has been called up as his replacement.

The issue adds another chapter to the ongoing tension between Barcelona and the RFEF over player management. In September, Barça manager Hansi Flick criticized Spain’s handling of Yamal after the winger aggravated a minor groin problem on international duty, sidelining him for several club matches.

De la Fuente has repeatedly maintained that “no risks are taken” with players and that if a footballer is declared fit by his club, he is eligible for national selection. Yet, the communication gap between the two sides appears to be widening.

Sources at Barcelona insist their medical staff acted responsibly and with full transparency, claiming that every decision has been made in consultation with Yamal and with the sole purpose of ensuring his full recovery.

Spain, the reigning Euro 2024 champions, currently top Group E with a three-point advantage over Turkey and two games left to play. However, the relationship between La Roja’s management and the Catalan giants remains under scrutiny as both sides navigate the fine line between club and country priorities.
