The Ultimate Derby: Real Madrid Rule the Spanish Capital

Brazilian star Vinícius Júnior led Real Madrid to a crucial victory in the Madrid derby, playing a starring role with two goals as Los Blancos defeated city rivals Atlético Madrid 3-2 in Matchday 29 of La Liga. The win came despite Madrid being reduced to ten men in the closing stages, allowing them to continue their pursuit of Barcelona at the top of the table.

The hosts started strongly, imposing their tempo from the opening minutes and threatening Atlético’s goal early on with two dangerous chances inside the first ten minutes.

The first came from Dani Carvajal, whose shot was brilliantly saved by Argentine goalkeeper Juan Musso, while Uruguay’s Federico Valverde nearly opened the scoring with a powerful effort that struck the left post.

Atlético, however, responded with an attempt from Marcos Llorente, which was well saved by Ukrainian goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, before Argentina’s Giuliano Simeone cleared a Vinícius effort off the line.

Against the run of play, Atlético took the lead in the 33rd minute when Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman capitalized on a pass from Simeone inside the box and finished into the net.

Real Madrid continued to push for an equalizer, and Aurélien Tchouaméni came close just before halftime, but his header went narrowly wide, leaving the visitors ahead at the break.

At the start of the second half, Madrid stepped up their intensity and found the equalizer through a penalty won by Morocco’s Brahim Díaz and converted by Vinícius, bringing the game back to level terms.

Just minutes later, Valverde turned the game around for Madrid after capitalizing on a defensive mistake inside the box, intercepting the ball and firing it into the net to give his side the lead.

Atlético refused to give in and quickly responded through substitute Nahuel Molina, who unleashed a stunning long-range strike into the top-right corner.

However, the final word belonged to Vinícius, who sealed the win in style with a beautifully curled shot from outside the box, reaffirming his star status and securing three vital points for Real Madrid.

The closing minutes became even more challenging for Madrid after Valverde was sent off, forcing them to finish the match with ten men. Nevertheless, they held on to their lead until the final whistle.

With this victory, Real Madrid moved to 69 points in second place, reducing the gap with leaders Barcelona, who extended their lead to 73 points after a narrow win over Rayo Vallecano thanks to a header from Uruguay’s Ronald Araújo following a João Cancelo corner.

Atlético Madrid, meanwhile, remain in fourth place with 57 points.
