Arsenal Crowned Champions of England After Manchester City Draw with Bournemouth
At long last, Arsenal have reclaimed the Premier League crown after being officially crowned champions for the first time in 22 years, benefiting from Manchester City’s 1-1 draw away to Bournemouth in the penultimate round of the season.
Manchester City entered the match knowing that anything other than victory would effectively end their hopes of retaining the title. However, Pep Guardiola’s side failed to secure all three points, officially handing Arsenal the championship with one round still remaining.
After years of heartbreak and near misses, the Gunners, under the guidance of Spanish manager Mikel Arteta, finally overcame the final obstacle and ended a league title drought that had lasted more than two decades, specifically since the famous 2003-04 “Invincibles” season under legendary French coach Arsène Wenger. The North London club also ended a six-year wait for domestic silverware after finishing runners-up to Manchester City in each of the previous three seasons.
Arsenal had moved significantly closer to the title just 24 hours earlier after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Burnley, temporarily extending the gap over City to five points. However, the Sky Blues’ draw against Bournemouth reduced the difference to four points before the final round — a gap that was no longer enough to keep City’s title hopes alive mathematically.
Manchester City appeared on the verge of suffering a painful defeat after the hosts took the lead through French forward Junior Kroupi in the 39th minute with a superb strike into the top corner. Bournemouth looked set to claim a historic victory before Norwegian striker Erling Haaland rescued his side with an equalizer in the fifth minute of stoppage time, sparing City from defeat but failing to prevent the title from slipping away.
Arsenal’s triumph came as a natural reward for the impressive performances they delivered throughout the campaign, establishing themselves as genuine contenders from the opening weeks and maintaining their consistency until the very end. Their strong response following last month’s defeat to Manchester City also proved decisive, as Arteta’s men went on to secure four consecutive victories without conceding a single goal.
In another match from the same round, Chelsea secured an important 2-1 victory over rivals Tottenham Hotspur to keep alive their hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Europa League next season, with the Blues currently occupying eighth place, which grants qualification to the UEFA Europa Conference League.
As for Tottenham, their poor run of results continued, leaving them seriously threatened by relegation. Spurs remain in 17th place, only two points above the relegation zone heading into the final round of the season.
