Germany Impress with Seven Goals as Tunisia Suffer Heavy Defeat

Germany began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in emphatic fashion with a 7-1 victory over Curaçao, while Ivory Coast secured a dramatic late win over Ecuador, Japan fought back twice to earn a draw against the Netherlands, and Tunisia suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat to Sweden.

At Houston Stadium in the United States, four-time world champions Germany had little difficulty asserting their superiority against a Curaçao side making its first-ever appearance at a World Cup.

Despite the significant gap in experience and quality, the Caribbean nation stunned Germany by equalizing early through Livano Comenencia, whose goal gave Curaçao their first-ever World Cup goal. The strike also carried special significance for the small nation of just over 160,000 inhabitants, making it one of the smallest countries ever to score at the tournament.

However, the celebrations were short-lived as Germany quickly regained control and dominated proceedings. Felix Nmecha opened the floodgates for the Germans before the European side continued to pile on the pressure against a defense that struggled to cope.

Kai Havertz was particularly influential, scoring twice, including one goal from the penalty spot, as Germany cruised to a convincing victory that restored confidence after disappointing performances in recent World Cup editions.

The result was also significant because it marked Germany’s first victory in an opening World Cup match since they went on to lift the trophy in Brazil in 2014.

In the other Group F fixture, Ivory Coast secured a valuable 1-0 victory over Ecuador at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

The match remained level throughout most of the contest before substitute Amad Diallo emerged as the hero in dramatic fashion. The winning goal came after an impressive individual run from defender Wilfried Singo, who surged down the right flank before setting up Diallo inside the penalty area. The Manchester United winger made no mistake, scoring in the 90th minute to hand his country all three points.

Japan Refuse to Give In

In another entertaining encounter, Japan came from behind twice to earn a valuable 2-2 draw against the Netherlands at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Texas.

The Dutch made the stronger start and took the lead through captain Virgil van Dijk, who powered home a well-placed header. Japan responded quickly, however, with Keito Nakamura bringing his side level.

The Orange regained the advantage shortly after the hour mark thanks to a superb curling effort from Crysencio Summerville, but Japan once again showed resilience and determination. Their persistence was rewarded in the 89th minute when Daichi Kamada headed home a dramatic equalizer.

Tunisia Endure Difficult Start

Tunisia’s seventh World Cup appearance got off to a disappointing start as they suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat against Sweden in Monterrey, Mexico.

The Swedish side established control from the opening minutes and took the lead through midfielder Yasin Ayari, who is of Tunisian descent, in the seventh minute. Alexander Isak then doubled Sweden’s advantage soon afterwards.

Although Omar Rekik pulled a goal back for Tunisia before half-time, Sweden dominated the second half and put the match beyond doubt.

Viktor Gyökeres added the third goal before substitute Mattias Svanberg made it 4-1. Ayari then completed the scoring in stoppage time by netting his second goal of the match and Sweden’s fifth, capping a dominant display for the Scandinavian side.
