Wembanyama Keeps San Antonio Alive in the NBA Finals
French superstar Victor Wembanyama led the San Antonio Spurs to a crucial 115-111 victory over the New York Knicks after producing a brilliant 32-point performance in Game 3 of the NBA Finals.
Wembanyama’s impact extended far beyond scoring, as he delivered a complete all-around display with eight rebounds and six assists, helping the Spurs secure a vital road win and cut the series deficit to 2-1.
The game took place in a special atmosphere at the iconic Madison Square Garden, which hosted its first NBA Finals game since 1999. The occasion also featured the presence of U.S. President Donald Trump, marking his first appearance at the famous arena during an NBA Finals game and adding further significance to the event.
Authorities implemented extensive security measures around the venue, resulting in a delay of nearly two hours before tip-off due to intensive screening procedures for fans entering the arena.
The Spurs demonstrated tremendous resilience by capitalizing on several costly mistakes made by the Knicks in the closing stages, earning a hugely important victory and putting themselves in a strong position ahead of Game 4 in the best-of-seven series.
The final minutes were packed with drama. Stephon Castle reduced the deficit to just two points after knocking down a three-pointer that made the score 111-109 with less than two minutes remaining, raising the intensity inside the arena.
The excitement increased when British forward OG Anunoby added another three-pointer to keep New York within striking distance. However, the Spurs responded quickly and maintained their advantage. When the Knicks connected on yet another three-pointer with 12.2 seconds left on the clock, the home crowd sensed the possibility of a dramatic comeback, but San Antonio remained composed under pressure and managed the closing possessions intelligently, benefiting from New York’s mistakes and the outstanding performances of their key players on both ends of the floor.
For the Knicks, Jalen Brunson led the scoring with 32 points, while Stephon Castle added 23. However, their efforts were not enough to prevent a disappointing home defeat.
Anunoby also delivered a strong performance with 28 points, but the Knicks struggled offensively in the final quarter and finished the game shooting just 40 field goals from 88 attempts, including 13 three-pointers from 37 attempts.
The defeat brought New York’s remarkable 13-game playoff winning streak to an end. The run had provided the team with enormous momentum throughout the postseason as they continue their pursuit of a first NBA championship since 1973 and an end to more than five decades of waiting.
