New York Knicks Crowned NBA Champions After 53-Year Wait
The New York Knicks brought one of the longest championship droughts in NBA history to an end after capturing their third NBA title with a 94-90 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the Finals. The win sealed a 4-1 series triumph and returned the Larry O’Brien Trophy to New York for the first time since 1973.
The historic achievement adds another glorious chapter to the franchise’s legacy. The Knicks had previously won NBA championships in 1970 and 1973 before enduring more than five decades of near misses and disappointment in their pursuit of basketball’s ultimate prize. This latest title came at the end of an exceptional season in which New York established themselves as one of the league’s most consistent and formidable teams.
The undisputed star of the championship-clinching game was Jalen Brunson, who delivered a sensational performance by scoring 45 of his team’s 94 points. His outstanding display guided the Knicks to the most important victory of their modern era and also earned him the NBA Finals MVP award.
Brunson once again demonstrated his value in high-pressure situations, carrying the offensive burden and leading another comeback after New York found themselves trailing by a comfortable margin against the home side.
The Knicks guard also set a new franchise record for the most points scored in an NBA Finals game, surpassing the previous mark of 38 points set by club legend Willis Reed during the 1970 Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers.
British forward OG Anunoby continued his clutch performances, contributing a crucial basket that extended New York’s lead to three points. Although the Spurs briefly managed to draw level, Brunson responded once more with a decisive drive to the basket, restoring the advantage and helping the Knicks hold on until the final buzzer.
New York reached the Finals following an impressive playoff run, highlighted by a dominant 4-0 sweep of the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals before continuing their momentum in the championship series.
On the other side, San Antonio’s hopes of reclaiming the title came to an end despite a remarkable season led by French superstar Victor Wembanyama. The Spurs had hoped to crown their promising new era with an early championship, but New York’s experience and composure under pressure proved decisive in the crucial moments.
Wembanyama finished the game with 19 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks, while rookie Dylan Harper impressed off the bench with 25 points.
Mikal Bridges contributed 14 points to the Knicks’ victory, while Josh Hart added 13 points and 11 rebounds. Meanwhile, Karl-Anthony Towns endured a difficult night, scoring just two points before fouling out in the fourth quarter, although he still contributed 10 rebounds and three steals.
With the championship secured, the Knicks have finally ended a 53-year wait for NBA glory, delivering a long-awaited triumph for one of basketball’s most iconic franchises and its passionate fan base.
