Djokovic and Sabalenka Form Dream Mixed Doubles Partnership at Flushing Meadows
Attention is turning to the US Open, the final Grand Slam of the tennis season, following the announcement of the leading pairings for the mixed doubles event. Heading the star-studded field are Serbian legend Novak Djokovic and world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, whose highly anticipated partnership is expected to add even greater excitement to the tournament at Flushing Meadows in New York.
Djokovic and Sabalenka are expected to be one of the biggest attractions in the competition, given their outstanding achievements and status among the sport’s elite. The pair are widely expected to secure one of the six automatic places awarded to the highest-ranked teams when entries close on 17 August.
The tournament, however, will be without two of the biggest stars of the current generation. World No. 1 Jannik Sinner and world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz have both opted not to compete in the mixed doubles event this year.
Sinner’s decision is aimed at preserving his physical condition and focusing exclusively on the singles competition after an exhausting season. He will also skip the Montreal Masters in order to give himself additional time to prepare for Flushing Meadows.
Alcaraz, meanwhile, remains sidelined as he continues his recovery from the wrist injury that previously forced him to miss both the French Open and Wimbledon. The Spaniard competed in last year’s mixed doubles tournament alongside Britain’s Emma Raducanu.
This year’s event follows the major changes introduced last season, with organizers seeking to make the mixed doubles competition more attractive and encourage greater participation from the sport’s biggest stars. Among the most significant changes are shorter matches in the early rounds to reduce the physical demands on players, as well as scheduling the tournament over two days before the start of the singles competition, allowing participants to compete without disrupting their preparations for the main draw.
Although the reforms have been welcomed by many players and officials, they have also drawn criticism, particularly from doubles specialists. Italian duo Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori, who won last year’s title, were among the most vocal opponents of the new format despite successfully claiming the championship and the $1 million prize.
Craig Tiley, Chief Executive of the United States Tennis Association, described the mixed doubles competition as one of the most entertaining events in tennis because it brings together the world’s best male and female players. He added that the tournament has become an ideal platform for showcasing both the technical quality and entertainment value of the sport, with elite players joining forces to create a unique and exciting spectacle for fans.
In addition to the six teams qualifying automatically through the rankings, tournament organizers will award eight wild cards to teams that will be announced at a later date. The final two places in the draw will be decided through a qualifying event featuring eight teams, scheduled for 24 August.
The mixed doubles competition will officially begin on 25 August, five days before the men’s and women’s singles tournaments get underway. The move is intended to give the event greater media exposure and fan attention while further enhancing its status within the US Open, which aims to deliver a memorable edition featuring the highest level of competition and the biggest names in world tennis.
