Ancelotti Hails Chelsea’s Rising Star Estevao After Brilliant Display in Brazil’s Win Over Senegal

Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti could not hide his admiration for Estevao Willian after the 17-year-old delivered another eye-catching performance in the Seleção’s 2-0 victory over Senegal at Emirates Stadium. The teenager scored the opener before Casemiro added a second, handing Senegal their first defeat in more than two years and reinforcing Brazil’s promising form under Ancelotti.

Estevao’s breakthrough strike arrived just after the half-hour mark, capping off a dominant spell in which Brazil repeatedly tested the Senegal defence. Moments earlier, Matheus Cunha had struck the woodwork twice, and the pressure finally told when Estevao reacted sharply inside the penalty area, illustrating the composure that has made him one of the most exciting prospects Brazil has produced in recent years. The youngster has now contributed directly to three goals across his last four appearances for the national team.

Casemiro’s goal — a well-timed finish from a Rodrygo set-piece — widened the margin and reflected Brazil’s steady improvement under Ancelotti, who has collected four wins from six matches since taking charge.

However, the match also brought worrying moments. Arsenal defender Gabriel and Spurs midfielder Pape Matar Sarr were both forced off with injuries, just days before the north London derby. Gabriel has been one of Mikel Arteta’s most reliable performers this season, appearing in all 17 of Arsenal’s matches across competitions while helping the team sit atop both the Premier League and their Champions League group.

Speaking after the incident, Ancelotti apologised to Arsenal supporters. He explained that Gabriel would undergo further checks, adding: “We are very sorry. Injuries are always disappointing, and we hope he recovers quickly.”

Following Brazil's victory, Ancelotti saved his highest praise for Estevao, telling reporters that Chelsea could not have acquired a greater talent: “He has an incredible amount of quality. It is remarkable to see a player at this level at his age. He’s creative, confident, and works extremely hard. Brazil is lucky to have him — and Chelsea as well.”

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has so far used Estevao cautiously, giving him 16 appearances in all competitions but managing his minutes to prevent burnout. Despite limited game time, the winger has shown flashes of the same flair he displays on the international stage. Maresca has long admired the youngster’s attitude and maturity, likening him to a young Cole Palmer from their days together at Manchester City’s academy.

According to Maresca, Estevao’s long-term future may lie in a more central role: “Right now he plays wide, but with experience he’ll drift inside. He reminds me a lot of Cole — technically sharp, tactically intelligent, and always eager to learn. His humility is what sets him apart.”

If his recent performances for Brazil are any indication, Chelsea may indeed be holding one of football’s next great attacking talents.
