Chelsea Hit Western Sydney for Six and Unveil Exciting New Talent

Chelsea began their new era under Spanish head coach Xabi Alonso with an emphatic 6-4 friendly victory over Australian side Western Sydney Wanderers as part of their preparations for the 2026-27 season.

The match was played at Accor Stadium in Australia, where the two teams produced an open and entertaining attacking contest featuring ten goals. Chelsea’s coaching staff were clearly eager to assess the players’ fitness levels while also giving opportunities to several youngsters and new signings.

The London club did not have to wait long to open the scoring, as promising Kazakhstan striker Dastan Satpayev found the net after only seven minutes to register his first goal in a Chelsea shirt.

Satpayev caught the eye with his early goal and energetic performance despite not having officially joined the Blues yet. Chelsea previously reached an agreement with Kazakhstan club Kairat Almaty to sign the player for approximately £3.5 million on a five-year contract, although the deal will only formally take effect next month once he turns 18.

As his contract has not yet come into force, Satpayev featured in the match as a trialist after Chelsea received permission from his current club and completed all the necessary legal procedures, including his temporary registration and parental consent. This allowed him to join the team on their pre-season tour after initially linking up with the squad at the training camp before travelling to Australia, with Alonso subsequently including him in the touring party.

The youngster quickly became one of the main attractions during Chelsea’s open training session in Sydney, where a sizeable number of supporters attended carrying Kazakhstan flags to show their support for a player regarded as one of the brightest emerging talents in Kazakh football.

Despite his young age, Satpayev already boasts an impressive record, having scored 26 goals in 58 first-team appearances for Kairat Almaty.

Hat-Trick Rescues Chelsea

Following Satpayev’s opener, the hosts responded quickly through Pantazopoulos, who equalized in the 14th minute.

Western Sydney then capitalized on Chelsea’s attacking approach to take the lead through Hammond in the 32nd minute. However, the Blues regained their composure before half-time when Dário Essugo scored the equalizer, sending the teams into the break level at 2-2.

The excitement continued in the second half as the Australian side moved ahead once again through Sicluna in the 62nd minute. Substitute Jamie Gittens restored parity just four minutes later by scoring Chelsea’s third equalizer of the match.

The twists did not end there, as Lawal put Western Sydney back in front with their fourth goal in the 78th minute, leaving the Australian club seemingly on course for a major upset against the London giants.

However, the closing stages produced a complete turnaround as Brazilian striker João Pedro delivered a stunning performance, scoring a nine-minute hat-trick in the 80th, 85th and 89th minutes. His treble inspired Chelsea to overturn the deficit and claim a thrilling 6-4 victory, giving their new manager the perfect start in his first match in charge.

The Blues will continue their preparations for the new season with a more demanding test against London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in their second friendly next Saturday. Alonso will use the match to continue assessing his squad and experiment with further tactical options before the competitive campaign begins.
