At the end of the 2012-2013 season, the two teams clashed in the Champions League final, marking their fifth meeting that season. It was the first all-German final in the history of the European Championship. Croatian player Mario Mandzukic gave Bayern the lead in the 60th minute, but current German national team captain Ilkay Gundogan equalized for Dortmund in the 68th minute from a penalty kick. However, Robben scored the winning goal in the 89th minute, securing Bayern’s historic treble.

Looking back at the 2018-2019 season brings to mind a strong start for Dortmund, who were 90 minutes away from equaling their record by avoiding defeat in 11 league matches when they hosted Bayern on November 10, 2018.

At that time, Bayern was four points behind leaders Dortmund. However, the Bavarian giants opened the scoring with a header from Lewandowski. Dortmund then equalized with a penalty kick converted by Marco Reus. This tie lasted only 3 minutes before Lewandowski put Bayern back in the lead. He then scored a third goal, which was cancelled due to offside. This moment was the turning point in the match. Reus later equalized the score before Spanish substitute Paco Alcacer secured the victory for the hosts.
