City Stumble Against Sunderland as Liverpool Drop Points at Home

Manchester City’s hopes of maintaining their pursuit of the Premier League summit suffered another setback after they were held to a goalless draw away to Sunderland in Matchday 19, in a contest that underlined the hosts’ resilience and their ability to neutralize one of the strongest attacking units in England.

Despite near-total dominance by the visitors, the final outcome reflected the difficulty City faced in breaking down Sunderland’s well-organized defense, buoyed by strong home support and inspired by Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka, who urged his teammates to battle until the final whistle and secure a valuable point against one of the Premier League’s most formidable sides.

City began the match at a high tempo and thought they had taken an early lead through Bernardo Silva in the sixth minute, but the assistant referee flagged for offside — a decision later confirmed by VAR. That disallowed goal served as an early indication that the task would not be easy for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Despite enjoying the bulk of possession, Sunderland were not without their moments. Dutch forward Brian Brobbey nearly punished City’s defense in the 19th minute after getting the better of Rúben Dias, only for his final touch to let him down. At the other end, Sunderland’s defensive organization limited Erling Haaland’s influence, with the Norwegian striker managing just one shot during the first half.

In the second half, Manchester City raised the tempo, with Brazilian winger Savinho missing two clear chances to break the deadlock. The introduction of Joško Gvardiol from the bench added a new attacking dimension, as he made confident late runs into the penalty area and threatened the goal on several occasions. The match also marked the return of Rodri after recovering from injury, bringing greater balance and control to City’s midfield.

However, Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs proved decisive, producing a series of key saves to preserve his clean sheet amid sustained City pressure until the final minutes. The woodwork also came to the hosts’ rescue, with Gvardiol going close as one effort flashed narrowly wide.

The draw extended Sunderland’s unbeaten home record this season, leaving them seventh in the table on 29 points, while Manchester City remained second, four points behind leaders Arsenal.

In another match, Liverpool were also held to a goalless draw at Anfield against Leeds United, dropping two valuable points at their staduim.

Despite Liverpool’s dominance in possession, they lacked attacking sharpness against a well-drilled Leeds defense that nearly claimed all three points, only for Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s goal in the 81st minute to be ruled out for offside.
