Gilbert Arenas Indicted Over Alleged High-Stakes Illegal Poker Operation in Los Angeles

Former NBA star Gilbert Arenas has been formally indicted by federal authorities in connection with an alleged illegal gambling ring he is accused of operating from his Encino mansion between September 2021 and July 2022. The 43-year-old, known in the basketball world as “Agent Zero,” now faces three federal charges including running an unlicensed gambling business and making false statements to investigators.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Arenas coordinated a series of clandestine high-stakes poker games, involving significant financial transactions and organized logistics. Prosecutors allege that the mansion was transformed into a full-fledged gambling venue, equipped with professional chefs, valets, and armed security. The operation reportedly featured a “rake” system—an illegal house cut taken from every poker pot.

Among the five other individuals indicted is Yevgeni Gershman, a 43-year-old Israeli national described by authorities as a “suspected organized crime figure.” Gershman is accused of orchestrating hospitality services during the games, including hiring young women to serve drinks and massages in exchange for tips—who, in turn, were required to pay a fee from their earnings.

The investigation uncovered text messages and photos, including an image of a poker table bearing Arenas’ name and image. Arenas has pleaded not guilty and is currently free on a $50,000 bond. His trial is set for September 23, and he could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted on all counts.

This isn’t Arenas’ first brush with the law. In 2010, he was sentenced to probation following a locker room incident involving illegal firearm possession during his time with the Washington Wizards. Arenas last played in the NBA in 2012 and has since transitioned into media, hosting a podcast titled Gil’s Arena.

In California, poker becomes illegal when game organizers take a house cut—exactly what Arenas and his associates are accused of doing.
