Marseille stun PSG as champions suffer first Ligue 1 defeat of season

Paris Saint-Germain’s unbeaten start to the Ligue 1 campaign came to a halt on a stormy night in Marseille, where Roberto De Zerbi’s side claimed a famous 1-0 victory despite the manager being sent off in stoppage time.

The only goal arrived after just five minutes when Morocco international Nayef Aguerd, formerly of West Ham United, rose highest at the far post to head in Mason Greenwood’s cross. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier misjudged the flight, allowing Aguerd to notch his first Ligue 1 goal since joining Marseille in the summer.

The encounter had been rescheduled by 24 hours due to heavy rain warnings in southern France, but the delay did little to dampen Marseille’s energy. Amine Gouiri almost doubled the lead before the interval, rattling the crossbar, while Geronimo Rulli pulled off a string of crucial saves to keep the Parisians at bay.

Luis Enrique’s men, without the injured Ousmane Dembélé — who remained in Paris to attend the Ballon d’Or gala where he surprisingly collected the men’s top prize — struggled to find rhythm. Gonçalo Ramos squandered a clear header after the restart, and Achraf Hakimi saw his effort denied by Rulli as PSG chased in vain.

Tempers boiled late on, culminating in De Zerbi’s dismissal after heated exchanges on the touchline.

The result leaves Marseille sixth with nine points from five matches, while PSG sit second on 12, three adrift of leaders Monaco. It is the champions’ first Ligue 1 loss since April, underlining that their grip on the division may be loosening.
