Fabian Horzeler became the youngest head coach in the English Premier League at the age of 31 after Brighton announced his appointment, succeeding Italian Roberto De Zerbi as the head of the club’s technical management.
Horzeler, who led St. Pauli to clinch the German second division title and secure promotion to the Bundesliga, signed a contract with the South Coast club until 2027.
The Texas-born Horzeler will now manage Brighton, a squad featuring experienced players such as James Milner (38), Danny Welbeck (33), and Lewis Dunk (32), all of whom are older than him.
Brighton president Tony Bloom stated that Horzeler’s span at St. Pauli made him a “leading candidate” to replace De Zerbi, who departed at the end of the season.
Horzeler will begin his new role upon obtaining a work permit, as Brighton begins preparations for the new season in July.
In a club statement, Bloom added: “From the outset of our coaching search, Fabian has consistently been a standout candidate, impressing us with his exceptional work at St. Pauli over the past 18 months.”
He continued, “His playing philosophy aligns perfectly with the style we envision for Brighton, and I am confident our fans will appreciate and enjoy this approach.”
Ryan Mason, who was 29 when he temporarily took over as Tottenham’s head coach in 2021, was the youngest to manage a team in the Premier League.
However, Horzeler is now the youngest permanent head coach since the Premier League’s foundation in 1992. Brighton’s new coach said, “The club has a unique history and a bold vision for the future, so I’m really excited to be part of the project.”
There is no doubt that Brighton views Horzeler as a long-term project, similar to his compatriot Julian Nagelsmann, currently managing the German national team. Many believe Brighton hopes to emulate the success of another German coach, Jurgen Klopp, who achieved great success with Liverpool, winning all major titles before departing at the end of last season.
Brighton’s new coach brings modern ideas that align with the evolving landscape of football in terms of planning and technical strategies, prompting many major clubs to appoint young, innovative coaches.
