Mexico Become the First Team to Reach the Knockout Stage as Switzerland Move Closer to Qualification

Mexico became the first nation to secure a place in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after claiming a second consecutive victory with a narrow 1-0 win over South Korea in Group A. Meanwhile, Canada and Switzerland moved closer to joining the hosts in the knockout stages after recording convincing victories over Qatar and Bosnia and Herzegovina respectively in Group B.

At Akron Stadium in Guadalajara, Mexico achieved their objective by collecting another three points, securing early qualification for the next round while also guaranteeing top spot in Group A ahead of the final round of group matches.

The only goal of the game arrived shortly after the break when Luis Romo found the net in the 50th minute following a closely contested encounter that featured an intense midfield battle and opportunities for both sides.

Mexico also benefited from the result of the group’s other fixture, as Czechia were held to a 1-1 draw by South Africa. Michal Sadílek gave the Czechs the lead in the sixth minute before Teboho Mokoena equalized from the penalty spot in the 83rd minute.

The victory lifted Mexico to six points from two matches after opening the tournament with a 2-0 win over South Africa. South Korea remain on three points after beginning their campaign with a victory over Czechia.

Canada Record Their Biggest World Cup Victory

In Group B, Canada celebrated a historic achievement by registering their first-ever World Cup victory in emphatic fashion, crushing Qatar 6-0 in Vancouver.

The hosts delivered an outstanding attacking display that highlighted the remarkable progress of Canadian football in recent years. Kyle Larin opened the scoring in the 16th minute before Jonathan David stole the show with a hat-trick, finding the net in the 29th, 45+3 and 90+2 minutes.

Substitute Nathan Saliba also got on the scoresheet, while Qatar’s Mohammed Manei inadvertently added to Canada’s tally with an own goal.

Qatar’s situation became even more difficult after they were reduced to nine men. Homam Al Amin was sent off in the first half before Assim Madibo received a red card after the break, leaving the Asian side facing an uphill battle to keep their qualification hopes alive.

The result moved Canada onto four points, meaning they now need only a draw against Switzerland in their final group match to secure qualification and potentially finish top of the group for the first time in their history.

Switzerland Establish Themselves as Serious Contenders

Switzerland also took a major step towards the knockout stage by defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1, bouncing back strongly after their opening-round setback against Qatar.

Johan Manzambi scored twice in the 74th and 90th minutes, while Ruben Vargas added a third goal before captain Granit Xhaka completed the scoring from the penalty spot in stoppage time. Bosnia’s only goal came through substitute Ermin Mehmić in the third minute of added time.

The victory lifted Switzerland to four points as well, leaving them level with Canada at the top of Group B, separated only by goal difference. Their upcoming encounter in the final round will therefore determine the group winner, while Qatar and Bosnia now face an almost impossible task to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
