What’s Behind Simona Halep’s Shocking Retirement?

Romanian tennis star Simona Halep stunned everyone by announcing her sudden retirement after losing in the first round of the Cluj-Napoca tournament held in her home country.

The former world No. 1 and winner of both the French Open (Roland Garros) and Wimbledon ended her tennis journey at the age of 33 following a crushing defeat to Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti, ranked 72nd in the world, with a score of 6-1, 6-1.

In a heartfelt message to the crowd, Halep explained her decision, saying: “I don’t know if I am speaking to you with joy or sadness, but I made this decision with a clear conscience. I always knew what I wanted. My body can no longer endure, but today, I wanted to play and say goodbye on the court.”

Halep was suspended on October 7, 2022, for four years—until 2026—after testing positive for a banned substance at the 2022 US Open, as well as due to irregularities in her biological passport data. However, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) later reduced her ban to nine months, recognizing that her positive test for Roxadustat—a blood-boosting substance used to treat anemia—was the result of a contaminated supplement.

Although she returned to competition in March 2024 and continuously denied any intentional doping, Halep struggled to regain the form that had once propelled her to the No. 1 ranking in October 2017, a position she held for a total of 64 weeks.

She had also withdrawn from the Australian Open qualifiers last month, citing knee and shoulder pain.

Born on September 27, 1991, in Constanța, Halep is the most successful Romanian tennis player in history. She began her journey in the sport at just four years old, following in her older brother’s footsteps. At 16, she left Constanța for Bucharest, where she won the 2008 French Open girls’ title—her only Grand Slam victory as a junior—earning her the No. 1 junior ranking before transitioning into professional tennis.

Halep’s career record includes 24 titles over 19 years on the court, highlighted by her Grand Slam victories at Roland Garros in 2018 and Wimbledon in 2019. She also reached three other Grand Slam finals—Roland Garros in 2014 and 2017, and the Australian Open in 2018.

Reflecting on her journey, Halep stated: “I won Grand Slam titles—that was all I ever wanted. Life goes on. There is life beyond tennis, and I hope we meet again. I will come to watch tennis as much as I can. Of course, I will continue to compete, but to do so at this level requires a lot from me, and at this moment, I can no longer do that.”
