Yemen Secure the Final Asian Cup Spot at Lebanon’s Expense
Yemen booked the final qualification place for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup after defeating Lebanon 2-0 in a decisive clash at Hamad bin Khalifa Stadium in Doha, Qatar, in the final round of Group B qualifying.
With this valuable victory, Yemen finished top of the group, one point ahead of Lebanon, securing their place in the continental finals to be hosted by Saudi Arabia. They will compete in Group E alongside South Korea, the United Arab Emirates and Vietnam.
The match began in balanced fashion, with play largely concentrated in midfield throughout most of the first half. Both teams adopted a cautious approach and avoided taking unnecessary risks in attack, fully aware of the importance and sensitivity of the encounter. As a result, clear-cut chances were scarce, with only a handful of limited attempts failing to seriously trouble either goalkeeper.
Lebanon’s best opportunity of the opening half came in the 40th minute when captain Mohamed Haidar unleashed a powerful strike from outside the penalty area, but the effort sailed just over the crossbar. The first half therefore ended goalless, with neither side able to find the attacking spark needed to break the deadlock.
At the start of the second half, Lebanon head coach Madjid Bougherra attempted to inject more attacking intent into his side by making several changes, introducing fresh options in the forward line, including youngster Jamie Kazan, who was making his senior international debut.
Lebanon looked more adventurous after the break and almost opened the scoring in the 59th minute when Yemen goalkeeper Mohammed Aman saved an effort from Jamie Kazan. The rebound fell kindly to Leonardo Chahin in a promising position, but his weak attempt was comfortably gathered by Aman.
While Lebanon were pushing for the opening goal, Yemen struck decisively on the counter-attack in the 62nd minute. With his first touch after entering the pitch, substitute Adel Qassem delivered a perfectly weighted pass that sent Nasser Mohammedoh through on goal against goalkeeper Mostafa Matar. The Yemeni forward kept his composure and finished clinically to give his side the lead.
The goal disrupted Lebanon’s plans and forced them to push forward in search of an equalizer. They came close on several occasions, most notably when the Yemeni defense cleared a dangerous effort from Chahin off the line before it could cross into the net.
As the match approached its conclusion, Lebanon committed more players forward in a desperate attempt to rescue the result. However, the increased attacking commitment left spaces at the back, which Yemen exploited effectively. In the 90th minute, Mohammedoh sealed the victory and qualification by scoring his second goal of the match after receiving an excellent through ball from substitute Mamdouh Bin Ajaj.
The result secured Yemen’s place at the 2027 AFC Asian Cup and completed a memorable qualification campaign, while Lebanon were left to reflect on a missed opportunity after falling just short of reaching the continental tournament.
