Barcelona, Bayern and Liverpool Advance After Dominant Attacking Displays

Barcelona of Spain, Bayern Munich of Germany and Liverpool of England booked their places in the Champions League quarter-finals after producing strong offensive displays in the second-leg ties of the Round of 16.

The standout performance came from Barcelona, who delivered one of their finest displays of the season by thrashing Newcastle United of England 7-2, sealing qualification with an 8-3 aggregate victory. With that emphatic win, the Catalan side set up a meeting with fellow Spaniards Atletico Madrid, who also progressed despite losing 3-2 to Tottenham Hotspur of England, having benefited from their 5-2 first-leg advantage.

At Camp Nou, in front of a crowd of more than 60,000, Barcelona imposed their attacking identity in devastating fashion on their visitors, who were hit from all angles by the Brazilian Raphinha and the Polish striker Robert Lewandowski, with each netting a brace, in addition to the impressive displays of Lamine Yamal, Fermin Lopez and Marc Bernal.

Newcastle, for their part, tried to keep pace through a brace from Sweden’s Anthony Elanga, which made it 2-2 early in the match, but the gulf in quality became clear in the second half as the hosts took complete control.

In Germany, Bayern Munich continued their impressive run and repeated their dominance over Atalanta of Italy with a 4-1 victory, having already won the first leg 6-1.

England star Harry Kane shone by scoring twice to reach his 50th Champions League goal, becoming the first English player to achieve that milestone. It was another notable feat that reflected the outstanding scoring form of the England captain, who has netted 10 goals in 9 matches in this season’s premier European competition.

The young Lennart Karl and Colombia’s Luis Diaz also contributed to the goal fest, while Serbia’s Lazar Samardzic scored Atalanta’s only goal.

Liverpool of England, meanwhile, turned the tie around against Turkey’s Galatasaray after overturning a 1-0 first-leg defeat with a commanding 4-0 win, booking a quarter-final clash with holders Paris Saint-Germain of France.

Egyptian star Mohamed Salah was one of the standout performers despite missing a penalty, as he played a major role in tipping the balance in his side’s favor by providing an assist and scoring a goal. The in-form Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai opened the scoring from a corner with a clever low finish, before Frenchman Hugo Ekitike added the second, Dutchman Ryan Gravenberch made it three, and Salah completed the rout with a superb strike from outside the box.

In another match, Atletico Madrid of Spain secured their place in the same round despite losing to Tottenham Hotspur of England, in an entertaining encounter that saw Frenchman Randal Kolo Muani and Dutchman Xavi Simons score for the hosts, while Argentine Julian Alvarez and Slovakia’s David Hancko found the net for the Spanish side.
