An epic clash in Madrid sees Bayern secure a crucial victory over Real Madrid

Bayern Munich took a major step towards reaching the UEFA Champions League semi-finals after securing a valuable 2-1 away victory over Real Madrid in the first leg of the quarter-finals.

The return leg will take place at the Allianz Arena next Wednesday, where the semi-finalist will be decided, with the winner set to face either defending champions Paris Saint-Germain or Liverpool, who meet tonight in Paris in their own first-leg clash.

With this result, Bayern managed to end a long-standing hoodoo against Real Madrid in the Spanish capital, as their last victory there dated back to 2001, before a run of four consecutive defeats, most notably in the 2024 semi-final when Madrid sealed qualification in dramatic late fashion.

At the Santiago Bernabéu, Bayern showed clear superiority in terms of organization and tactical discipline, despite a strong start from Real Madrid, who threatened through French star Kylian Mbappé and Brazilian Vinícius Júnior. However, veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was in outstanding form, making several crucial saves to keep his team in the game.

As the match progressed, the German side began to impose their rhythm and exploit spaces, eventually taking the lead through Colombian winger Luis Díaz on a swift counter-attack just before half-time.

At the start of the second half, Bayern maintained their pressure and capitalized on a midfield error, with Harry Kane adding a second goal with a precise finish.

Although Mbappé later pulled one back following a cross from England’s Trent Alexander-Arnold, Real Madrid’s late attempts were not enough to find an equalizer, as Bayern left with a vital win that gives them a clear advantage ahead of the return leg.

Late and valuable win for Arsenal

In Lisbon, Arsenal followed a similar path, claiming a hard-fought victory over Sporting with a late goal, giving the London side a psychological edge ahead of the return leg at the Emirates Stadium. The winner of this tie will face either Barcelona or Atlético Madrid in the semi-finals.

The match began with strong pressure from Sporting, who threatened Arsenal’s goal early through Uruguay’s Maximiliano Araújo and Mozambique’s Geny Catamo, but Spanish goalkeeper David Raya was alert to deny the danger.

Arsenal responded through their captain Martin Ødegaard and Noni Madueke, but luck was not on their side, including an effort from the latter that struck the crossbar.

As the game entered its final moments, Spanish coach Mikel Arteta introduced Brazilian Gabriel Martinelli and German Kai Havertz—a decision that proved decisive. Martinelli delivered a clever pass behind the defense, which Havertz controlled superbly before finishing into the net in stoppage time, scoring the winner and securing an important victory that helped the team bounce back from recent domestic disappointments.
