Barcelona Win Tough Summit Clash and Hold Firm at the Top of LaLiga
Barcelona overturned an early deficit to defeat Atlético Madrid 3–1 in the marquee matchup of LaLiga’s fifteenth round.
The result keeps Barça at the top of the table with 37 points, four ahead of Real Madrid, who still have a game in hand and will face Athletic Bilbao later today. Atlético, who arrived at Camp Nou on a run of seven consecutive wins across all competitions, remained fourth with 31 points after suffering their first league defeat since last August.
This was the first major fixture to be played at the newly reopened Camp Nou, which returned to action last month after two and a half years of renovation works. However, the reduced capacity of around 45,000 seats — well below the planned 105,000 once the project is completed — made for a less intense atmosphere than usual for a game of this magnitude.
Atlético opened the scoring in the 19th minute through Álex Baena following a swift counterattack, but Brazilian winger Raphinha equalized seven minutes later after a clever pass from Pedri allowed him to skip past goalkeeper Jan Oblak and slot the ball home.
The hosts nearly took the lead in the 37th minute when Dani Olmo was brought down in the box by Pablo Barrios, earning a penalty. But Polish striker Robert Lewandowski fired his effort over the bar.
After missed chances on both ends, Olmo capitalized in the 65th minute when a loose ball fell to him inside the area, and he placed a deceptive finish into the net. Ferran Torres then sealed the three points in stoppage time, converting a cross from Alejandro Balde.
Speaking after the match, Raphinha said: “It’s important that we believe in the work we’re doing. We know matches like this will come, and we have to be prepared for them. That’s the spirit we need. We’re gaining confidence game by game. Today was decisive. Points like these can determine the league title.”
