Ekitike Welcomes Isak’s Arrival at Liverpool: “It Will Make Me Better”

Liverpool forward Hugo Ekitike insists the arrival of Alexander Isak will only benefit his own development, as competition intensifies at Anfield following a record-breaking transfer window.

The 23-year-old French striker joined the Premier League champions in the summer for £69 million and made a bright start, scoring five goals in his first 10 appearances. But Liverpool continued to pursue their top target, Alexander Isak, eventually prising him away in a £125 million deal on deadline day — the most expensive signing in the club’s history.

Much debate has centred on how head coach Arne Slot intends to integrate both forwards into his system. While they are yet to start together, Ekitike sees the situation as an opportunity rather than a threat.

“At a club of this size, there will never be just one striker,” Ekitike explained. “Isak’s arrival is good for me. I still have a lot to learn at my age, so competing with and playing alongside players of his quality can only help me improve. Whether we play together depends on the coach, but I can adapt — I’ve played in one- and two-striker systems before.”

Both strikers showed their firepower in last week’s Carabao Cup tie against Southampton, with Isak starting and Ekitike replacing him at half-time. The Frenchman grabbed a dramatic late winner but marred the night by removing his shirt in celebration, earning a second yellow card and subsequent suspension.

“I think that wasn’t smart from me,” Ekitike admitted. “I punished myself and let the team down, but I’ve apologised to my teammates and supporters. It won’t happen again. I just want to focus on football and keep contributing to the team.”

With Liverpool seeking to defend their Premier League crown and challenge for European honours, Slot faces the enviable task of managing two high-profile strikers. For Ekitike, however, the challenge is welcome: a chance to sharpen his game and stake his claim in a squad brimming with attacking talent.
