Real Madrid Add to Manchester City’s Disappointment and Knock Them Out of the Champions League
Real Madrid inflicted another setback on Manchester City, as the Spanish giants once again got the better of their English rivals to secure a place in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals with a 2–1 victory at the Etihad Stadium in the second leg of the Round of 16.
Having already won the first leg 3–0 in Madrid, Los Blancos entered the match with great confidence, clearly demonstrating from the outset that they know exactly how to handle the pressure of high-stakes encounters.
Manchester City, on the other hand, found themselves in a difficult situation, especially after suffering an early blow in the form of a red card, which further complicated their task against an opponent with the quality and experience to capitalize on such circumstances.
Match Highlights
The key moment of the first half came when Real Madrid were awarded a penalty after a handball by Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva inside the box. Following a VAR review, the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and showing Silva a red card, forcing City to continue the match with ten men. Brazilian star Vinícius Júnior stepped up and converted the penalty in the 22nd minute, giving his side a crucial advantage both in score and momentum.
The goal also marked a personal milestone for Vinícius, as he became the youngest player to reach 80 appearances in the modern Champions League era, surpassing the record of teammate Kylian Mbappé, who returned to the squad after missing several matches through injury and was introduced in the second half.
Despite the difficult circumstances, Manchester City showed resilience and gradually regained some balance. From a set-piece situation, they managed to equalize through Norwegian striker Erling Haaland, who capitalized on a delivery into the box to score his eighth goal of the competition this season.
At the start of the second half, the hosts pushed forward in search of a goal to revive their hopes. Despite being a man down, they created several dangerous chances, particularly through Haaland, but were denied by an outstanding performance from Ukrainian goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, who replaced the injured Belgian Thibaut Courtois and delivered a crucial display to keep his team steady in decisive moments.
Both managers made multiple substitutions in an attempt to influence the outcome. Pep Guardiola introduced Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush and Ghanaian winger Antoine Semenyo, while Álvaro Arbeloa responded by bringing on Mbappé in place of Moroccan midfielder Brahim Díaz. However, the score remained unchanged until the closing stages.
In stoppage time, Vinícius put the game beyond doubt, scoring his second goal and sealing the victory after a pass from French midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni, confirming Real Madrid’s deserved progression as the most successful club in the competition’s history.
