Ruben Amorim Eyes Brighton’s Baleba as Manchester United Weigh Costly Midfield Options

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is intensifying efforts to bring Brighton’s dynamic midfielder Carlos Baleba to Old Trafford, but the financial demands could make this one of the summer’s most challenging negotiations.

According to The Independent, United have placed the 20-year-old Cameroon international high on their recruitment list. Brighton, however, are holding firm on a valuation of around £120 million ($163m) — a figure that would put Baleba among the most expensive signings in Premier League history. United are reportedly considering an opening offer of £80m ($109m) plus performance-related add-ons, with winger Jadon Sancho potentially included in the package. The Seagulls, however, are understood to have little interest in the former Borussia Dortmund star.

Baleba, who joined Brighton from Lille in 2023, quickly established himself as one of the league’s most promising young midfielders. His blend of ball-winning ability, passing range, and composure under pressure has attracted interest across Europe. He featured in 35 matches across all competitions last season, helping Brighton secure a top-half finish.

If United cannot strike a deal, Amorim’s preferred fallback is Crystal Palace’s rising star Adam Wharton. However, Palace are expected to demand an even higher fee, with chairman Steve Parish reluctant to lose another key player after Liverpool’s pursuit of Marc Guehi and Tottenham’s interest in Eberechi Eze.

Other midfield targets on United’s radar include Sporting CP’s Morten Hjumland — though concerns remain over his physicality in the Premier League — and Atalanta’s Ederson, who played a pivotal role in the Italian side’s recent Serie A success.

With the transfer window ticking down, United face a decisive few weeks to determine whether they will meet Brighton’s demands or pivot to alternative signings.
