Fans Turn Against Mbappé During Real Madrid’s Win Over Oviedo
Real Madrid’s 2-0 victory over visiting side Real Oviedo in Matchweek 26 of La Liga turned into a tense evening for French star Kylian Mbappé, who was met with boos from the Santiago Bernabéu crowd from the moment he entered the match.
Los Blancos came into the game under difficult circumstances after losing the league title to arch-rivals Barcelona, in addition to enduring another season without a major trophy for the second consecutive year, making the supporters increasingly critical of the team’s biggest stars, particularly Mbappé.
Manager Álvaro Arbeloa chose not to start the French forward due to the injury that had ruled him out of the previous two matches, including the decisive El Clásico defeat against Barça. However, his second-half introduction did not pass quietly, as the fans greeted him with jeers that began during the warm-up and continued with almost every touch of the ball.
Criticism towards Mbappé has intensified in recent weeks amid accusations from sections of the club’s supporters and media that the player has been acting too individually, especially after his short trip to the island of Sardinia before the team’s clash against Espanyol, which some considered inappropriate at such a crucial stage of the season.
Despite the atmosphere surrounding the Frenchman, Real Madrid managed to dominate the game against Oviedo and opened the scoring before half-time through Gonzalo García, who took advantage of a pass from Moroccan international Brahim Díaz before finishing clinically from inside the box.
In the second half, Mbappé himself contributed to the second goal, delivering an excellent pass to English midfielder Jude Bellingham, who drove into the area and fired a low shot into the net to seal the victory for the Spanish giants.
Uruguayan midfielder Federico Valverde was also absent from the match due to a head injury suffered following an altercation with his French teammate Aurélien Tchouaméni, in an incident that sparked considerable controversy within the club over recent days.
The victory came just hours after club president Florentino Pérez announced his candidacy for another term, firmly rejecting any idea of resignation despite the growing criticism directed towards him.
Pérez attacked what he described as media campaigns targeting him personally, claiming that certain parties were using the team’s disappointing results this season in an attempt to blame him for the club’s decline.
Meanwhile, Arbeloa’s future at the club remains uncertain, especially amid increasing reports suggesting that Portuguese coach José Mourinho could return to manage Real Madrid next season in an attempt to guide the club back to winning trophies.
Real Madrid raised their tally to 80 points in second place after securing their 25th league victory of the season, while Oviedo continued to struggle near the bottom of the table after suffering their 19th defeat.
Elsewhere, Valencia drew 1-1 with Rayo Vallecano, with Diego López scoring for the home side, while French defender Florian Lejeune netted for Rayo, who also saw Angolan forward Randy Nteka miss an early penalty.
Girona and Real Sociedad also played out a 1-1 draw, with Uruguayan striker Cristhian Stuani scoring for Girona, while Jon Martín found the net for the Basque side.
