Bayer Leverkusen have completed the signing of promising English defender Jarell Quansah from Liverpool for a reported £35 million, marking a significant addition to their backline ahead of the 2025–26 Bundesliga campaign. The 22-year-old centre-back inked a five-year deal with the German champions, who are bolstering their squad after a historic domestic double.
Quansah’s rise has been rapid. After graduating from Liverpool’s academy, he made 58 appearances for the Merseyside club, netting three goals. He featured prominently during the 2023–24 season, helping Liverpool clinch the League Cup and playing a role in their Premier League title-winning campaign under new manager Arne Slot.
His reputation surged further this summer when he helped England’s Under-21s defeat Germany in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship final — a feat that underlined his credentials on the international stage.
Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes expressed enthusiasm over the acquisition: “Jarell already proved himself among world-class defenders at Liverpool. He brings power, pace, and a high defensive IQ — crucial elements for our future.”
This deal follows a busy summer of negotiations between the two clubs. Earlier, Liverpool secured midfield prodigy Florian Wirtz and full-back Jeremie Frimpong from Leverkusen, adding to their rebuilding efforts amid uncertainties surrounding Ibrahima Konaté and Joe Gomez. Konaté has just one year left on his current contract and is yet to commit to an extension. Reports suggest Liverpool are now eyeing Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi as a possible replacement.
Quansah’s move had been on the radar last year when Newcastle United attempted to include him in a swap deal involving Anthony Gordon. However, Liverpool resisted the proposal, preferring to hold on to the young talent.
Now, with Leverkusen’s defensive unit gaining one of England’s brightest prospects, the Bundesliga outfit continues to build a squad capable of challenging at both domestic and European levels.
