Premier League: Saturday’s top-flight football matches

Brentford v Chelsea

Chelsea have had a gruelling week, first losing in the EFL Cup final in dramatic fashion on Sunday, conceding late in extra time to Liverpool, before following that up with a last gasp midweek win over Leeds in the FA Cup.

As a result, the Blues may be running on empty by the time they face rivals Brentford in this Premier League clash.

The Bees’ recent form is a worry but they have faced some tough assignments, taking on four teams in the top five in their last six games.

Thomas Frank’s side have also won three of the last four head-to-heads between these two, drawing the other, and they should be able to avoid defeat.

Newcastle v Wolves

Newcastle were taken the distance by Blackburn in the FA Cup on Tuesday and the Magpies have clearly not sorted out their defensive issues.

Their last eight Premier League matches have produced four or more goals and they were embarrassed in their 4-1 defeat to Arsenal last weekend.

The signs do not bode well for the visit of Wolves, who have won four of their last five matches.

Nine of Wolverhampton’s last 11 away games in the Premier League have seen both teams find the net and both sides are fancied to contribute to a high-scoring affair in this one.

Tottenham v Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace have been boosted by the arrival of new manager Oliver Glasner and they could get on the scoresheet in this clash with Tottenham.

Both teams have found the net in 15 of Spurs’ last 16 league games and their emphasis on attacking play does leave them vulnerable at the back.

Nevertheless, the home team should have too much for these opponents and are fancied to secure the victory.

Ange Postecoglou’s side have won and both teams have scored in five of their last six league games and a repeat of that outcome looks a big runner in this London derby.

Luton v Aston Villa

Luton endured a 6-2 humbling at the hands of Manchester City in the FA Cup in midweek and while things may not be quite that bad against Aston Villa, expect both teams to score and over 2.5 goals to land.

Both teams have scored in 16 of Luton’s last 20 Premier League games and seven of the Hatters’ last eight home games have produced three or more goals.

Aston Villa have seen over 2.5 goals and both teams score in five of their last six matches and that run looks set to continue at Kenilworth Road.
