Italian Jannik Sinner and Serbian Novak Djokovic, ranked first and sixth respectively, cruised into the third round of Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam tournament in tennis.
Sinner repeated the same commanding performance he delivered in his opening match against compatriot Luca Nardi, whom he defeated 6-4, 6-3, 6-0. This time, he swept past Australian Aleksandar Vukic, ranked 93rd in the world, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 in just an hour and 40 minutes.
Sinner will next face Spaniard Pedro Martinez, who advanced after defeating Argentine Mariano Navone 7-5, 7-5, 7-6 (8-6).
As for Djokovic, he advanced to the third round for the sixteenth consecutive time with another easy win, this one against Britain’s Daniel Evans, ranked 154th, by a score of 6-3, 6-2, 6-0 in an hour and 47 minutes.
The Serbian star, who is chasing his first Grand Slam title since 2023—when he claimed the US Open crown for the fourth time in his career—will meet compatriot Miomir Kecmanović in the third round. Kecmanović progressed with a win over Dutchman Jesper de Jong 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.
After struggling with stomach issues during his four-set win over Frenchman Alexandre Muller in the opening round, Djokovic appeared to be in full health against Evans, on route to his 99th career win at the English championship.
In other notable results, veteran Croatian Marin Čilić, ranked 83rd in the world, rediscovered some of the form that took him to the final in 2017 and to a US Open title in 2014. He ousted British fourth seed Jack Draper with a 6-4, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 win in two hours and 39 minutes and will next face Spaniard Jaume Munar.
Also advancing to the third round was Australian Alex de Minaur, the 11th seed, who defeated France’s Arthur Cazaux 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, 6-0, and Czech Jakub Menšík, the 15th seed, who got past American Marcos Giron 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4). Meanwhile, American 13th seed Tommy Paul was eliminated by Austria’s Sebastian Ofner 6-1, 5-7, 4-6, 5-7.
On the women’s side, Poland’s Iga Świątek, ranked fourth in the world and eighth seed at Wimbledon, showed a mixed performance in her match against American Katie McNally. After dropping the first set 5-7, having her serve broken twice, she stormed back to dominate the 125th-ranked player in the next two sets 6-2, 6-1 to book her spot in the third round, where she will face another American, Danielle Collins, who beat Slovenia’s Veronika Erjavec 6-4, 6-1.
Świątek is contesting the English tournament where she has never gone beyond the quarterfinals—reaching that stage only once, in 2023—fresh off her first-ever final on grass, where she lost last Saturday to American Jessica Pegula in the Bad Homburg final.
The former world number one is still in search of her first title since winning the French Open (Roland Garros) last year for the third consecutive time.
Also reaching the third round was young Russian Mirra Andreeva, the seventh seed, who defeated Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti 6-1, 7-6 (7-4). Defending champion and 17th seed Barbora Krejčíková of the Czech Republic beat American Caroline Dolehide 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 to set up a clash with another American, tenth seed Emma Navarro, who ousted Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova 6-1, 6-2.
Also advancing to the third round for the fifth straight time in her fifth main draw appearance was Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion and 11th seed, who scored a straightforward 6-3, 6-1 victory over Greece’s Maria Sakkari.
