Bayern and Dortmund: a Rich and Eventful History Filled With Goal-Scoring Matches

There is no voice louder in German football than that of anticipation of the upcoming summit between Bayern Munich and their guests, Borussia Dortmund, next Saturday at the Allianz Arena in the 27th round of the Bundesliga.

While this summit may not carry the same weight as many of its predecessors due to Dortmund’s distance from competing for the title, however, followers reminisce about historical memories every time these two teams meet, as they’re considered indicators for predicting the match’s outcome.

Dortmund’s Dominance

Led by their coach, Jurgen Klopp, who assembled a team blending local talents with young players, Dortmund clinched the league title at the end of the 2010-2011 season.

The following season, with just 5 rounds remaining, the ‘Ruhr’ team led the standings by 3 points over Bayern Munich before facing them in the 30th round on April 11, 2012, in a decisive match for the title.

Despite Bayern’s dominance, Dortmund created the most chances and took the lead in the 77th minute through Robert Lewandowski. Bayern had a golden opportunity to regain an equal footing in the 86th minute with a penalty kick taken by Arjen Robben, but goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller excelled in stopping it. The match ended with Dortmund celebrating their march toward a second consecutive league title.

In the 2011-2012 season, the two teams faced off in the German Cup final a week after the end of the league. Dortmund aimed to win the first local double in their history, while Bayern looked to gain confidence before competing in the Champions League final against Chelsea a week later in Munich.

Dortmund took the lead in the third minute through Japanese midfielder Shinji Kagawa. Bayern equalized from the penalty spot, but Dortmund regained the lead with a penalty converted by Mats Hummels. The latter ended the first half with a 3-1 lead thanks to a goal from Lewandowski.

Lewandowski continued his goal-scoring form in the second half, adding a fourth goal. Although Frenchman Franck Ribery scored for Bayern, Lewandowski’s hat-trick sealed the historic victory for Dortmund.

The Bavarian Breaks the Dominance

After two years of Dortmund’s dominance, Jupp Heynckes aimed to stop their rivals by assembling a team considered one of the strongest in German football history. Bayern Munich won the league title with a 25-point difference, claiming the Super Cup as well at the expense of Dortmund, whom they had eliminated in the cup quarter-finals.

At the end of the 2012-2013 season, the two teams clashed in the Champions League final, marking their fifth meeting that season. It was the first all-German final in the history of the European Championship. Croatian player Mario Mandzukic gave Bayern the lead in the 60th minute, but current German national team captain Ilkay Gundogan equalized for Dortmund in the 68th minute from a penalty kick. However, Robben scored the winning goal in the 89th minute, securing Bayern’s historic treble.

Looking back at the 2018-2019 season brings to mind a strong start for Dortmund, who were 90 minutes away from equaling their record by avoiding defeat in 11 league matches when they hosted Bayern on November 10, 2018.

At that time, Bayern was four points behind leaders Dortmund. However, the Bavarian giants opened the scoring with a header from Lewandowski. Dortmund then equalized with a penalty kick converted by Marco Reus. This tie lasted only 3 minutes before Lewandowski put Bayern back in the lead. He then scored a third goal, which was cancelled due to offside. This moment was the turning point in the match. Reus later equalized the score before Spanish substitute Paco Alcacer secured the victory for the hosts.
