Champion Again: Sinner Retains His Wimbledon Crown

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner successfully defended his Wimbledon title, overcoming world No. 3 Alexander Zverev in a hard-fought four-set final, 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (7-2), 6-3, 6-4, on Centre Court at the All England Club.

The victory further cemented Sinner’s status as the leading player of his generation. After recovering from the loss of the opening set, the Italian produced a composed and commanding display to retain his London crown, capturing his fifth Grand Slam title and his second consecutive Wimbledon championship.

The 24-year-old continues to enjoy a remarkable 2026 season, claiming his sixth title of the year after previously winning the first five ATP Masters 1000 events of the campaign, further underlining his dominance on the sport’s biggest stages.

Sinner had also lifted his previous Grand Slam title at Wimbledon last year before enduring mixed fortunes at subsequent majors. He finished runner-up to Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz at the 2025 US Open, reached the semi-finals of this year’s Australian Open, and suffered a surprise second-round exit at Roland Garros, leaving the French Open as the only Grand Slam title still missing from his collection.

Zverev entered the final full of confidence after capturing his maiden Grand Slam title at the French Open only weeks earlier, benefiting from the early exits of Sinner and Novak Djokovic, as well as Alcaraz’s absence through injury. That triumph ended a run of three defeats in Grand Slam finals at the 2020 US Open, the 2024 French Open, and the 2025 Australian Open.

Despite defeat, the German leaves Wimbledon with plenty of positives after enjoying the best run of his career at the Championships by reaching the final for the first time. The result will also see him return to world No. 2 in Monday’s ATP rankings, equalling the highest ranking of his professional career.

The final was fiercely contested from the outset, with both players relying heavily on powerful serving, making breaks of serve difficult to come by. After an absorbing tie-break, Zverev edged the opening set 9-7 to send an early warning to his opponent.

Sinner responded immediately in the second set, which also went the distance. This time, Zverev committed two costly unforced forehand errors in the tie-break, allowing the Italian to take control and level the match with a comfortable 7-2 tie-break victory.

The third set remained evenly balanced until the seventh game, when Zverev missed a valuable opportunity to break serve. Minutes later, after nearly three hours of play, Sinner secured the first service break of the match, paving the way to take the set 6-3 and seize control of the final.

The Italian maintained his momentum in the fourth set. With the score locked at 3-3, Sinner delivered the decisive blow by breaking Zverev’s serve once again before confidently holding serve the rest of the way to complete victory after three hours and 46 minutes.

The triumph marked Sinner’s tenth consecutive victory over Zverev, extending his remarkable dominance in their rivalry. He also became the first player in several years to successfully defend the Wimbledon men’s singles title. Beyond retaining the trophy, the Italian reached another major career milestone by recording his 100th victory in Grand Slam competition.

Jannik Sinner successfully defended his Wimbledon title with a remarkable victory over Alexander Zverev, further cementing his place among tennis’ elite and continuing his dominant 2026 season.
