Inter Milan Reaffirms Support for Inzaghi Despite Record Champions League Final Loss

Inter Milan endured a humbling 5-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final held in Munich, marking their heaviest loss in a showpiece European match. This setback follows a 1-0 final loss to Manchester City in 2023, making it the second time in three seasons that head coach Simone Inzaghi has led “Nerazzurri” to a final defeat. Reports estimate that over 40,000 Inter fans traveled to Munich, while approximately 51,000 supporters gathered at the San Siro to watch the game on big screens—underscoring the immense devotion of the fan base.

Despite the 12th, 20th, 63rd, 73rd, and 86th-minute goals that dismantled Inter’s defense, club president Giuseppe Marotta expressed unwavering confidence in Inzaghi’s future at the club. Appointed in June 2021, Inzaghi guided Inter to the 2022–2023 Serie A title and two Coppa Italia victories (2021–2022, 2022–2023). Under his tenure, the team recorded an overall win percentage of nearly 60% across all competitions through May 2025. His tactical acumen was on display as Inter overcame European heavyweights such as Bayern Munich and Barcelona en route to this year’s final, despite the disastrous end.

In the recently concluded 2024–2025 Serie A campaign, Inter finished just one point behind champions Napoli, boasting a total of 78 points over 38 matches, with 23 wins, 9 draws, and 6 losses. However, they fell short in the Coppa Italia semi-finals against AC Milan, leaving the Nerazzurri without a trophy for the first time in five seasons. Injuries to key defenders and inconsistencies in midfield rotations contributed to the team’s inability to clinch silverware. Nevertheless, Marotta indicated that Inzaghi has one year remaining on his contract, and club executives plan to meet with him imminently to discuss the path forward.

After the final whistle, Inzaghi, now 48 years old, remarked, “There’ll be time to talk with the club when emotions have settled.” His measured response suggests a desire to weigh options before making a definitive choice. Should he stay, Inzaghi will focus on preparing the squad for the expanded FIFA Club World Cup in the United States (June 14 – July 13, 2025), where Inter aims to redeem its European campaign.

Attendance figures at San Siro averaged around 70,000 this season—a 5% increase from the previous year—reflecting the club’s surging popularity. Since 2021, Inter’s transfer expenditure under Inzaghi’s guidance surpassed €150 million, balanced by player sales amounting to over €120 million, resulting in a modest net spend. This strategic approach has sustained the club’s financial health while maintaining competitiveness on multiple fronts.

Overall, the board appears committed to continuity, believing that extending Inzaghi’s contract will foster stability and improve chances in future Champions League and domestic campaigns. Whether Inzaghi accepts the renewal or pursues other opportunities, the relationship between coach and club remains grounded in mutual respect and ambition.
