José Mourinho Set for Real Madrid Return After Florentino Pérez Victory
José Mourinho is expected to be confirmed as Real Madrid’s next head coach following Florentino Pérez’s re-election as club president, extending his command of the Spanish giants until 2030 and clearing the final political condition attached to the Portuguese manager’s return.
Pérez, 79, won 65% of the vote in Real Madrid’s first contested presidential election in two decades, defeating renewable energy businessman Enrique Riquelme, who received 35% support from the club’s voting members. The result gives Pérez a renewed mandate at a crucial moment for Madrid, who ended the 2025-26 season without a major trophy and saw Barcelona reclaim La Liga with a decisive 2-0 Clásico victory.
Mourinho’s comeback had been positioned as one of Pérez’s headline campaign moves. The 63-year-old reportedly agreed a three-year deal last month, but the appointment depended on Pérez retaining the presidency. With the election now settled, Real Madrid are expected to move quickly to complete one of the most dramatic managerial returns in recent European football.
For Pérez, the victory represents both continuity and pressure. Since returning to office in 2009, he has overseen one of the most successful eras in Real Madrid’s modern history, including multiple Champions League triumphs, major commercial expansion and the redevelopment of the Santiago Bernabéu. Yet the latest campaign exposed clear sporting frustration, and his promise to restore Madrid’s dominance now carries immediate weight.
Mourinho’s return would bring back a coach whose first spell at the Bernabéu remains one of the most intense chapters of the club’s recent past. Between 2010 and 2013, he won La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup, while also re-establishing Madrid as a consistent Champions League force. His 2011-12 side remains historically significant, winning La Liga with 100 points and scoring 121 goals, a campaign remembered as one of the most explosive domestic seasons in Spanish football history.
The challenge this time is different. Mourinho is expected to inherit a squad under scrutiny after a trophyless year and a campaign that ended with questions over tactical identity, consistency and leadership. Álvaro Arbeloa, who stepped in during January after Xabi Alonso’s departure, is now set to make way as Pérez turns to a manager he knows well and trusts to impose authority quickly.
Mourinho leaves Benfica after taking charge in September and guiding them to third place in the Primeira Liga. His move back to Madrid would mark another major turn in a managerial career defined by high-profile jobs, elite dressing rooms and a reputation for delivering immediate competitive intensity.
The election itself also underlined Real Madrid’s unique ownership model. Unlike many European superclubs, Madrid remain owned by their members, who elect the president. Riquelme’s challenge made this the club’s first presidential contest in 20 years and placed issues such as ownership structure, transfer strategy and institutional direction at the centre of the debate.
Pérez used his victory speech to reinforce that message, presenting his new term as a defence of Real Madrid’s identity while also promising renewed ambition. He spoke of fighting for a 16th European Cup, maintaining pride in the Bernabéu and welcoming back “one of the best coaches in the world” in Mourinho.
Beyond the managerial change, Pérez is also expected to pursue a major transfer statement. Reports around his campaign indicated plans for a club-record offer for an unnamed marquee player, part of a broader attempt to rebuild momentum after Madrid’s season of disappointment.
For Mourinho, the emotional appeal of returning to the Bernabéu is obvious. But sentiment will not protect him for long. Real Madrid’s standards remain unforgiving, and his second spell will be judged not by nostalgia, but by whether he can quickly restore control, competitiveness and trophies to a club that expects to lead both Spain and Europe.
