The risk of relegation from the English Premier League, looms gloomily and significantly over Chelsea, after a 10-point deduction from Everton’s score, which posed a strong threat to the club.
Everton, in response, plans to appeal the decision issued on Friday evening, finding themselves in an unpleasant position in their battle to avoid relegation. Chelsea, too, faces allegations of financial rule violations in the English Premier League, specifically tied to purported payments associated with former owner Roman Abramovich.
Stefan Borson, the legal advisor who counseled Manchester City in a similar case where they also face threats for identical reasons, expressed his perspective on the matter. He stated, “Deducting 10 points from Everton’s score is a severe decision due to a clear violation of financial fair play. However, it underscores that the anticipated sanctions for City (if found guilty) and now Chelsea (if charged and in the event of admitting responsibility for off-the-book payments) could likely lead to relegation.”
Borson emphasized the disproportionality of a penalty of a mere fine on Chelsea, after having breached the rules of Financial Fair Play, and Profit and Sustainability rules, and he stated that such a decision needs urgent reconsideration.
Borson pointed out the upcoming January window as a potentially interesting period. Even in the best-case scenario, Chelsea may no longer be able to rely on convincing an independent committee to accept their Covid allocations and penalties as extraordinary adjustments.
Addressing concerns about relegation, Borsson mentioned, “Whether it is a matter of concern or not, the sheer scale of the English Premier League’s breaches has reached a level where, if proven, must lead to relegation if Manchester City is found guilty.”
Adding to Chelsea’s woes, the club’s management faces the prospect of moving away from Stamford Bridge, the fortress of the Blues team, for a duration that could extend to four years.
According to reports from “The Sun,” Todd Boyle, the president of the Blues, suffered another setback with the failure of his plan to build a new Chelsea stadium in the “Earl’s Court” area.
Boyle had been exploring two options to provide Chelsea with a modern stadium—either renovating Stamford Bridge or constructing a new stadium in Earl’s Court.
However, the “Earls Court” area has already been earmarked for the construction of 4,000 new homes, commercial and office spaces, along with the establishment of a public park.
Consequently, Chelsea may be compelled to embark on the renovation of Stamford Bridge, a process that could take four years, as the administration aims to increase the current capacity from 41,000 to 61,000.
This means Chelsea will have to find an alternative venue to play their matches at until the Stamford Bridge renovation is completed.
