English Premier League Clubs Unite to “Outsmart” Chelsea
The English Football League has taken a decisive step to limit the duration of player’s contracts to a maximum of five years, aligning themselves with the regulations set forth by the European Football Association (UEFA).
This reform, adopted on Tuesday, is a direct response aiming to limit a frequent practice among certain clubs, notably Chelsea, who are known for entering into extended contracts to avoid financial inspection. The strategy involves spreading transfer fees over the contract’s duration, expressed as lower annual payments on the club’s financial records for more extended contracts.
Under the revamped system, a transfer allowance of 100 million euros is now distributed over five years, equating to 20 million per year, in contrast to the previous 12.5 million euros for an eight-year contract.
The Premier League has voted to “adjust the player’s registration costs regulations to comply with UEFA regulations. Henceforth, a maximum of a five-year period will apply to all new or extended player contracts,” as stated in the official announcement.
The distinctive approach of Chelsea’s American owners, who have been prolific in securing long-term contracts during the past two transfer periods, is at the core of this reform. Examples include the signing of Argentine player Enzo Fernandes and Ukrainian player Mykhailo Modric on an eight-and-a-half-year contract and Frenchman Benoit Badyachel on a seven-and-a-half-year deal.
The London club repeated this approach last summer, securing the services of Frenchmen Axel Dezazi and Christopher Nkunku with six-year contracts—a practice that is now forbidden under the new regulations.
Despite Chelsea’s attempts at “circumventing” these contractual changes, the club lags in the overall standings, currently occupying the 12th position. Their next challenge looms closer on Saturday against Sheffield United, which is apparently an easy match given the latter’s standing in the last position in the league.
