Egyptian international striker Omar Marmoush led Eintracht Frankfurt to a dramatic 3-3 draw against Bayern Munich in stoppage time during the sixth round of the Bundesliga. RB Leipzig were the biggest beneficiaries of this result, now trailing the league leaders, Bayern, on goal difference after their 1-0 win over Heidenheim.
Marmoush, who solidified his position as the Bundesliga’s top scorer with 8 goals—surpassing Bayern’s English star Harry Kane, who has 5—shone with a brace for Frankfurt. His second goal came in the fourth minute of added time, leveling the match after he had already equalized earlier (22′). Bayern had initially taken the lead through South Korean defender Kim Min-jae (15′).
Bayern’s other goals came from French duo Dayot Upamecano (38′) and Michael Olise (53′). Meanwhile, Frankfurt’s second goal was scored by French forward Hugo Ekitike (35′).
Under the leadership of new coach Vincent Kompany, Bayern had started the season with six consecutive victories across all competitions. However, they’ve now gone three matches without a win, following last week’s 1-1 home draw against Bayer Leverkusen and a midweek 1-0 loss to Aston Villa in the Champions League.
On the other hand, Frankfurt remains in strong form, sitting third in the Bundesliga standings—just one point behind Bayern and tied on points with Leipzig, who only lead by goal difference.
Frankfurt has proven to be a formidable opponent for Bayern in recent seasons, winning three of their last seven meetings, including a 5-1 defeat last season. That result signaled Bayern’s struggles, as they finished the campaign without any major silverware. This time, Bayern were without young star Jamal Musiala, who missed the game due to a hip injury.
As is often the case between these two sides, the match proved to be a tough challenge for Bayern. Despite taking an early lead through their defender Kim, who scored from close range after a pass from the veteran Thomas Müller (15’).
However, Marmoush quickly responded, exploiting Bayern’s high press. Frankfurt’s Ansgar Knauff delivered a perfectly weighted pass, allowing Marmoush to sprint forward and fire a stunning shot into the corner of Manuel Neuer’s net (22′).
Frankfurt then took the lead from another counterattack, with Marmoush providing the assist for Ekitike to score (35’).
The Bavarians regained the lead early in the second half, courtesy of Michael Olise’s spectacular finish, which was brilliantly set up by Kane. The England captain found Olise with a clever pass, allowing the Frenchman to beat a Frankfurt defender and fire past the goalkeeper (53′).
In a high-paced, end-to-end game with both teams applying pressure, Frankfurt once again hit Bayern on the counter. Marmoush demonstrated his solid finishing once more, capitalizing on a header from substitute Eric Ebimbe, slotting the ball calmly past Neuer to secure a crucial point for his side (90+4′).
Elsewhere, RB Leipzig continued their impressive form with a 1-0 win away at Heidenheim.
Belgian forward Lois Openda scored the game’s only goal (59′) to maintain Leipzig’s unbeaten start to the season. Marco Rose’s side remains second in the table, trailing Bayern only on goal difference, with 14 points.
As for Heidenheim, in just their second season in the Bundesliga, they remain on 9 points, holding onto eighth place.
