Season Surprise: Salah to Al-Hilal?

The president of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority, Turki Al-Sheikh, stirred speculation by posting an image of Mohamed Salah wearing Al-Hilal’s jersey on his personal Facebook page.

The post, left without a caption, added to the ambiguity surrounding the future of the Egyptian star, whose contract with Liverpool expires at the end of the current season.

According to a report by the Spanish newspaper Relevo, Salah, 32, has agreed to join Al-Hilal starting next season, despite rumors that Liverpool’s management is negotiating to convince him to renew his contract.

The report claims Salah has expressed his readiness to play for Al-Hilal beginning with the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, to be hosted in the United States.

José Félix Díaz, editor-in-chief of the Spanish newspaper Marca, discussed the possibility of Liverpool stars Darwin Núñez and Salah moving to Al-Hilal during the TV show Dawreena Ghair on Tuesday. He said, “Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal are competing to sign Núñez, and in my opinion, the English club will also lose Salah and Virgil van Dijk.”

He added, “We might see Salah in the Saudi Pro League next summer. That’s the most likely path if he leaves Liverpool. He’s not considering staying in Europe, and playing in the Club World Cup with Al-Hilal is possible.”

In 2023, Al-Ittihad had shown interest in signing Salah, but Liverpool’s management and then-manager Jürgen Klopp refused to let him leave.

Klopp recently addressed Salah’s expiring contract, saying to Sky Sports, “I hope Salah stays with Liverpool. He is the greatest striker in the club’s modern era.” Klopp added, “Salah is an extraordinary person and athlete. He’s the best ambassador for Egypt and an incredible sportsman.”

The Saudi newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat highlighted negotiations, reporting that Salah could replace the injury-prone Brazilian Neymar at Al-Hilal. Al-Sheikh’s image of Salah in Al-Hilal’s jersey has further fueled the rumors. Strengthening the squad with top talent is crucial as Al-Hilal prepares for their opening FIFA Club World Cup match against Real Madrid.

However, signing Salah depends on offloading Neymar’s lucrative contract to another club and Liverpool’s willingness to meet Salah’s demands. Reports suggest Salah is waiting for a formal offer to stay at Liverpool, ideally for a two-season extension.

Despite rumors that Salah prioritizes Liverpool, significant progress in renewing his contract has yet to be made.

According to European reports, the Saudi Pro League has positioned Salah as a top signing for their domestic competitions.

League officials reportedly remain unconcerned by the possibility of Salah extending his Liverpool contract. Salah is enjoying one of his best seasons with Liverpool, scoring 21 goals and providing 17 assists across competitions.

While there’s no official confirmation of Liverpool abandoning their efforts to renew his contract, if Relevo’s report holds true, the Egyptian winger has already agreed to move to Al-Hilal, joining the star-studded “Al-Zaeem.”
