Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic has officially ended his partnership with coach Andy Murray, as announced today. Djokovic, who has been struggling with results since last year, appears to still be searching for answers—answers he seemingly did not find alongside the former British player, who joined his coaching team late last year.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion posted on social media: “Thank you, coach Andy, for all the hard work, fun, and support you’ve given me over the past six months, both on and off the court. I’ve enjoyed strengthening our friendship.”
The split comes just 12 days before the start of the French Open at Roland Garros, the second Grand Slam tournament of the season, during a challenging period for “Nole.”
The tennis world was surprised last November when Djokovic, now 37, appointed Murray—recently retired and with no prior coaching experience—as part of his team.
Murray said in a statement: “Thank you to Novak for this incredible opportunity to work together, and to his team for their tireless efforts over the past six months.”
The Briton, who defeated Djokovic in the finals of the 2012 US Open and 2013 Wimbledon—two of his three career Grand Slam titles—added: “I wish Novak all the best for the rest of the season.”
Djokovic’s struggles began last season, with his last title being the Olympic singles gold medal in Paris—his 99th career trophy.
The high-profile pairing got off to a promising start when Djokovic beat Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz at the Australian Open, but a subsequent injury forced him to withdraw from his semifinal match against Germany’s Alexander Zverev. His form declined afterward, leading to a mutual agreement to part ways after appearing together in just four tournaments over six months.
Djokovic had previously acknowledged his poor form following his early exit from Indian Wells, stating there were “no excuses” for his performance—a reflection of the deeper crisis he’s been experiencing in recent months.
